As the search for a new coach for the senior national team of Nigeria continues, the former coach of the team Jose Peseiro has been linked with a shock return to the role he left in February, OwnGoalNigeria.comreports.
Peseiro left upon the expiration of his deal as coach of the team, despite leading the team to their best finish at the AFCON since 2013 when they won it. They were beaten 1-2 by the host Cote d’Ivoire in the final.
He was replaced by one of his assistants in Finidi George, but after a disappointing performance in the last two world cup qualifiers games where they were held to a 1-1 draw by South Africa before losing 1-2 to Benin Republic, Finidi was relieved off his role as coach of the team.
The NFF in a communique released after both games said they are on the lookout for an expatriate coach, who will tinker the team for AFCON qualifiers which begins in September, it appears a return is on the card for Peseiro.
According to Gerald Baloyi of local agency, Vodia Sports International Management, Peseiro has been offered to South Africa Premier Soccer League (PSL) giants Mamelodi Sundowns.
The Portuguese joins Frenchman Patrice Carteron, and former Orlando Pirates head coach Josef Zinnbauer, who are also linked with Sundowns.
Baloyi, however, said despite Peseiro being linked with the Sundowns coaching job, he could return to the Super Eagles job.
“Yes Vodia Sports International Management offered Jose Peseiro to Sundowns, though the Nigerian national teams are interested in bringing him to take over again,” Gerald Baloyi told KickOff.
