The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) will appoint an interim coach in the event that they fail to reach total agreement with a new substantive coach for the senior national team of Nigeria, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Super Eagles will be back in action in September for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers games against Benin Republic and Rwanda respectively, but six weeks after the exit of Finidi George as coach the body is yet to name a replacement.

Talks have been on with prospective coaches for the role with the duo of Tom Saintfeit and Eric Chelle the favourite for the job, following the decision of Herve Renard to snub the job based on the low salary on offer.

Earlier today the technical committee of the NFF met to discuss the issue with the AFCON qualifiers really close but no much progress was made, leaving a member of the board to say the option of an interim coach is a huge possibility with time running out on them.

He said Austine Eguavoen is for now the ready and available choice for the job, and it will be just for the two games against Benin Republic and Rwanda respectively with a new coach expected to take over after the games.

It is all still subject to change if a decision is reached before the end of this week.
