The football community in Nigeria was yesterday rattled by a post from a suspicious handle on Instagram acting as that of German coach Bruno Labbadia announcing his appointment as coach of Super Eagles.
Labbadia was announced as the coach of the Nigerian team by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), but a breakdown in talks centered around payment of his taxes led to the collapse of the proposed deal.
Nigeria is now under the guidance of Austine Eguavoen who is filling in as interim coach pending the outcome of a meeting of the technical committee of the NFF later today.
However we can exclusively reveal that the handle on Instagram that posted about his imminent arrival as coach is a parody account, which the NFF also erroneously followed when he was announced as coach, but had to unfollow it when they discovered their error.
Sources at the NFF revealed that talks are underway with some coaches but a decision could be delayed till next year or after the October round of games in in the AFCON 2025 qualifiers, keeping Eguavoen in charge.
