The head coach of the senior national team of Benin Republic Gernot Rohr could be sacked if his team fails to make it to the 2025 AFCON, OwnGoalNigeria.com can exclusively reveal.

Rohr has been in charge of the team for two years and after the failure to make it to the last AFCON, the team are currently second behind the Super Eagles of Nigeria in the race to be at the next edition of the tournament.

They are one point ahead of third place Rwanda after four round of games , and head into Thursday game against Nigeria hoping for at least a shock win or a draw to take into the final game away to Libya in Benghazi.

Playing at their adopted home ground in Cote d’Ivoire, a defeat against the Super Eagles will see them walk a tight rope especially if Rwanda gets a result against Libya in the group’s other game. It will mean even a win against Libya on the final day might not be enough unless Nigeria beat Rwanda in Uyo.

Already there are fears in the camp of Benin Republic with reports in the local press Local press has adding more pressure on Rohr. One of the publications, Fraternite, slammed the coach’s call-ups for the matches against Nigeria and Libya.

It described it as “A list without surprises… but with questions”, according to Sportsvillagesquare.

The “list is worrying and there are enough doubts about the competitiveness of most of the players”, Fraternite claimed.

“Indeed, he (Rohr) has remained faithful to his squad for almost two years without almost any new features. However, the expectations of the supporters are high.”
