The availability of Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye for the Super Eagles world cup qualifiers games in March is in doubt following a wrist ligament injury that will keep him out for a while, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.
Okoye played his first game for the senior national team of Nigeria in almost three years in the dead rubber AFCON qualifiers game against Rwanda, which the team lost 1-2 in Uyo.
He was expected to continue his push to displace Stanley Nwabali from the number 1 spot when the world cup qualifiers resumes in March , but that plans have been put on hold with the injury that could keep him out for almost four months.
It has opened the door for a new goalkeeper, who will be recommended to whoever gets the nod to lead the Super Eagles in the world cup qualifiers. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is currently looking for a substantive coach for the team after Austine Eguavoen interim role for the AFCON qualifiers ended.
Eguavoen is expected to return back to his role as technical director of the NFF, with a new coach expected to be in the stable, before the resumption of the qualifiers. Eguavoen is however expected to recommend a goalkeeper to replace Okoye in the event that he fails to be fit for the game.
