The head coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Eric Chelle has handed new role to three players in the senior national team of Nigeria in his bid to make his preferred diamond formation work, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.
Chelle has handled the team in five games since his appointment, winning three with two draws. He has played the same formation in all of the games but isn’t satisfied with the manner which it was executed particularly in the final third.
His idea is now to use three players in a role which is different from the one they are used to at club level, and he has faith that they will deliver and make the system work.
Top of the list is Samuel Chukwueze who will henceforth play in a role just behind the striker like he played at the Unity Cup tournament in England, rather than play wide on the wing.
The same idea is what he has in mind for Bayer Leverkusen winger Nathan Tella, who already played in that role against Jamaica at the Unity Cup. He wants him in a role very close to the main striker in a two man attack.
Frank Onyeka who is back at Brentford after a loan spell in Germany with Augsburg is another who will get a new role higher up the pitch, rather than at the base as a defensive midfielder. Chelle feels it’s the best way to make use of his energy. A very useful quality when they press teams high up the pitch.
