As many as five not too known Nigerian players will be eyeing their breakthrough season in a top flight league when the new season gets underway, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.
We take a look at five who are hoping to use next season as a springboard to a new height in their career.
Ebenezer Akinsamiro (Pisa, Serie A) – He spent last season on loan to Serie B side Sampdoria, where he did enough to catch the attention of Pisa who were recently promoted to the top division. Signed on a season long loan deal, a good performance will likely see him push for a spot in the Nigerian team.
Nwankwo Donald ( Elche, LaLiga) – Already had a season in the Spanish top flight but as a bit part player. Last season he played a pivotal role in helping the team gain promotion back to the LaLiga and he will go into next season hoping to stamp his authority in his new role as a right back.
Ahmed Abdullahi ( Sunderland, Premier League) – A former U17, U20 player for Nigeria. The 20 year old joined the team during last summer transfer window. Spent a huge part of last season out injured and had to play with the B team for most part of it, while working his way to full fitness. So far he has been one of the breakout star for the team in their pre season tour , and will be hoping to take that form into the English Premier League when the season begins.
Nosa Obarentin ( Napoli, Serie A) – Back from a loan spell in Serie B with Bari and already included in the team’s pre season camp. He is said to be one of the players head coach Antonio Conte is banking on to spring a surprise, and possibly keep his spot in the team when the new season begins.
Oluwaseun Ogbemudia (Union Berlin, Bundesliga): Standing at an impressive height of 188cm at age 18, his high positional awareness, effectiveness in aerial and ground duels and his ability to comfortably play from the back has put him in the frame for a breakthrough year at the Bundesliga side. Due to a shortage of number in his position, he is set to get game time season.
