Eric Chelle will remain in charge of the senior national team of Nigeria for the Africa Cup of Nations in December despite failing to qualify Nigeria for the 2026 World Cup, OwnGoalNigeria.com can exclusively reveal.
Chelle failed to rescue what was a poor start to the world cup qualifiers by Nigeria, after they failed to pick the ticket to represent Africa at the Intercontinental playoff following a penalty shootout defeat to Dr Congo in the final of the playoff.
The disappointment aside the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) were overtly impressed by the attempt the team made, although it is expected that he will be given a minimum target of taking the team to at least the final of the tournament in Morocco.
” It’s too short a time to bring in another coach. Chelle has already compiled the list of players for the AFCON and he will be in charge unless he decides otherwise. The target will be to reach the final of the tournament as opposed the initial target of semi final, if they had picked the world cup ticket”, a board member of the NFF told OwnGoalNigeria.com.
” Hopefully we will regroup in two weeks for AFCON preparations with the disappointment of the world cup playoff behind us. All we can do at this time is to look ahead”.
