Reaction has trailed the decision of head coach of South Africa Hugo Broos to include 22 year old Hannover defender Ime Okon in his squad for the 2026 World Cup, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.
Okon was born to a Nigerian father and a South African mother, and in the past spoke about his desire to play for the senior national team of Nigeria.
However he has since made a u-turn and pledged his commitment to the cause of Bafana Bafana, and was among the players without a competitive game picked by Broos for the world cup.
Reacting to his inclusion a couple of South Africans questioned the nationality of the 22 year old saying he isn’t one of them. Their statements is coming hot on the heels of some citizens clamping down on Illegal immigrants.
He is seen as the son of an illegal immigrants unless his father provides details of how he came to the country. Broos is however unconcerned and will be hoping to cap him at the tournament.
