The power of sports to foster international relations and community development was on full display this week as the Moses Simon Foundation hosted its latest football tournament with support from the French Embassy in Nigeria.

Representative of the French Embassy in Nigeria Ketty Regis attended the event, and highlighted the initiative as a model for “sports diplomacy.” Emphasizing the universal language of the game, the Embassy representative noted in Hausa, “Wasanni na haɗa mu”—Sport brings us together.

Nigeria international Moses Simon, a celebrated figure in French professional football, was lauded for his dual role as a high-performance athlete and a dedicated philanthropist.

“In France, he represents the talent, determination, and excellence of Nigerian football. In Nigeria, through his Foundation, he uses his experience and influence to support young people,” Regis stated.

A key theme of this year’s tournament was the urgent need for gender inclusivity in sports. The Embassy underscored that the advancement of women’s football is not merely a matter of fairness, but a vital investment in the leadership and confidence of the next generation.

“Every girl should have the opportunity to train, compete, and develop her talent in a safe and supportive environment,” the representative noted, offering a direct message to the female athletes in attendance: “Your talent matters, your ambition matters, and your place is on the field.”

As the partnership between the Moses Simon Foundation and the French Embassy continues to evolve, the focus remains clear: leveraging the transformative power of football to deepen the friendship between France and Nigeria while creating tangible opportunities for young people.
