Nigeria international striker Victor Osimhen has been named as the new captain of Turkish champions Galatasaray following the exit of Mauro Icardi, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.
Icardi and Galatasaray couldn’t reach an agreement on extending his contract leading to his exit, and making the captain position of the team vacant.
Osimhen who was his deputy was elevated to the role ahead of the start of next season, putting an end to any discussion of a summer exit which has long been seen as a possibility in the ongoing summer transfer window.
The 26 year old is not new to the role of wearing the captain armband as he is the first vice captain of the Nigerian team, and in the AFCON wore the armband in the semi final penalty kick defeat to the host Morocco.
Since joining the team on loan before his permanent signing last summer, he has fired them to back to back league titles with a total of 41 goals in 52 games.
