Brentford defender Michael Kayode has revealed that he snubbed an approach to play for the senior national team of Nigeria, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.
Born in Italy to Nigerian parents, he was capped by Italy at youth level keeping him eligible for a switch of allegiance, but he confirmed that he opted against playing for Nigeria in favour of waiting for his chance with Italy.
The 22 year old made this known in the camp of Italy, where he is preparing to make his senior international bow for the Roberto Mancini side following his elevation from the U21.
” It’s true that Nigeria approached me, but I came through the Italian youth ranks, and for anyone playing for Italy is an honour”, he said.
“Before the match against Chelsea I didn’t know about the call-up, I found out on my phone and it was an incredible emotion.
*There are a lot of young players here in the Italy squad and that’s good for the team. I want to give my all for the group. Mancini spoke to me and explained the tactical work he wants,, there is always something to learn”.
