Head coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Eric Chelle has explained how his team recovered from a 0-1 deficit to claim a 2-1 win over Madagascar in the opening game of the 2027 AFCON qualifiers, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.
Goals from debutants George Ilenikhena and Moses Usor helped Nigeria to recover from falling behind to claim their first win ahead of Tuesday’s game away to Guinea-Bissau.
While speaking at the post match conference, Chelle admitted that his team didn’t play at the level required of them, and also praised goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali for his save with scores at 1-1.
” We were not good enough in certain areas of the game and conceded from a bad mistake. We also have to praise Nwabali for his save at 1-1 and after that we recovered to pick this win”, he said.
He went further to explain the tactical switch that did the trick for his team. ” We noticed they parked the bus with so many players at the back making it hard to us to properly use our 4-4-2 diamond to good effect.
“When we noticed I switched to 4-3-2-1 because when a team have players at the back you can only come from the wings. That was why I introduced Moses Simon and Moses Usor on the wings, because they can go past their markers with ease”.
