The last two seasons have been hugely disappointing for Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League. After finishing just above the relegation zone for two campaigns in a row, it was decided by the powers that be that major investment on the pitch was required this summer. The board stayed true to their promise to invest, spending over £200 million on new players to give manager Roberto De Zerbi every chance of success. But after five games played, Spurs are bottom of the table, winless, and struggling to score goals.
A striker Spurs have been linked with, as recently as this summer, is Galatasaray’s Nigeria international Victor Osimhen. What’s not been working for De Zerbi’s side, especially, is what happens in front of goal, which is why football betting onlinealways has them pegged as the underdogs. But if they were to bring in Osimhen, all that could change in an instant.
What Osimhen Brings To The Table
Some people may argue that moving for Osimhen represents a risk, as he’s never played in the Premier League, and this summer’s approach to recruitment has been to sign players who have experience playing in the division. But what the 27-year-old forward brings to the table is a proven track record of scoring goals consistently at all levels. Out-and-out number 9s are rare these days, but Osimhen continues to be one of the best.
Across his career, in which he has played in four different countries, Osimhen has scored 179 goals and made 46 assists in just 302 outings. When you consider minutes played, he has a direct goal involvement every 1.09 games, which is stunning considering this spans around 10 years.
Why Spurs Need Osimhen
After the recruitment drive this summer, one of the key areas Spurs failed to add to was the central striker position. They currently only have Dominic Solanke who can be considered anywhere near a natural fit for that position, even though he started his playing career as a winger. Richarlison hasn’t been registered following a breakdown in his relationship with De Zerbi, while new signing Omar Marmoush has failed to make an impact centrally, preferring to play wide left. Osimhen’s arrival would not only add more quality to the position, but he’d be a natural fit too.
What Spurs also have, even though they’re not showing it enough right now, are players who can create. Marmoush, Savio, Mohammed Kudus and James Maddison, to name just a few, are all capable of making things happen; they just need someone who can convert chances into goals, which Osimhen is more than capable of, as proven.
Final Thoughts
What it could all come down to is whether Spurs can afford Osimhen after a summer of spending big. While the club spent a lot, they did recoup over £100 million too, so there could be some room to manoeuvre in the market if De Zerbi wanted Osimhen as a priority.
However, there’s another club to consider in all this. Galatasaraywon’t want to sell their star man, and they don’t have to. He’s been in electric form at the start of the season, although he’s currently out injured, and as a result, they would require a huge fee even to consider a sale. And that could ultimately be a deal-breaker.
