The fourth edition of Nigeria’s biggest grassroots football tournament is in full swing. The top four teams are battling for the title, while the best players continue their pursuit of individual honours.

Who has stood out from the rest, made history at 1xCup 2026, and caught the attention of professional club scouts?

The Golden Boot Race:

Ezeji Ikenna of Ighalo FC is the leading contender for the 1xCup 2026 Golden Boot and its ₦300,000 cash prize. The prolific striker has recorded nine goals and two assists in seven matches.

Although his team has been eliminated, he still tops the scoring charts and has a strong chance of remaining there through to the final.

For much of the tournament, his closest challenger was Emeka Sylvester of Ajuwa FA, who scored seven goals and provided three assists in five matches, earning the MVP award three times.

But Ajuwa FA also fell in the round of 16, leaving Sylvester with no chance of catching Ikenna.

Lawal Muiz of Young Strikers FC and Obiora Sunny of Collins Edwin SC are still in the hunt.

Both forwards have six goals each and at least two matches remaining — the semi-final plus either the final or the third-place play-off — giving them a genuine opportunity to overhaul the Ighalo FC striker.

Who will be named 1xCup 2026 MVP?

The winner of this award, and its ₦300,000 cash prize, will largely be decided by the tournament’s final matches. Even so, Obiora Sunny is already the front-runner for the 1xCup 2026 MVP title.

The Collins Edwin SC forward has six goals and five assists, putting him in a strong position to finish at the top of both leaderboards.

Emeka Sylvester of Ajuwa FA and Hafiz Odunayo of Elite Stars FC could still challenge the tournament leader in combined goals and assists, with both players having earned the most MVP awards — three apiece.

Team success, however, is not built on goals and assists alone; a solid backline matters just as much.

Collins Edwin SC boast the best defence in the competition, having conceded just three goals in seven matches and kept clean sheets throughout the entire group stage.

Defender Ejiofor Morgan has marshalled the tournament’s strongest backline — and if the Gladiators’ run continues, he too could force his way onto the 1xCup 2026 MVP shortlist.

Battle for the Golden Glove

The race for the tournament’s best goalkeeper award, and its ₦250,000 cash prize, is equally tight. Ebitu Michael of Newhope Naija FC still leads the way with four clean sheets, but Chidera Maduka of Collins Edwin SC is close behind.

The Gladiators’ shot-stopper has two matches left and an excellent chance of overtaking his rival in the clean-sheet rankings, especially given his side’s outstanding defensive record.

More than a tournament

1xCup 2026 is more than just a competition.

The biggest stars of the fourth edition are attracting scouts’ attention and could earn the chance to build professional careers.

Many of the best players from previous editions now play in Africa, Europe, and Asia, while some have even earned places in the Nigeria national team.

Follow the remaining 1xCup 2026 fixtures as the tournament reaches its conclusion — and witness the rise of new football stars.
