Super Eagles Vs Tanzania: Why Only Six Points Will Do In November

Nigeria’s AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign has already been a roller coaster. It began with a hard-fought 2-1 comeback win over Madagascar in Uyo, with debut goals from George Ilenikhena and Moses Usor. Then came a 3-0 defeat away to Guinea-Bissau on September 29, which made the road to the finals far harder.

Guinea-Bissau now have six points, Nigeria three. The Super Eagles need a response, and the two Super Eagles vs Tanzania matches in November have become the key moment of the campaign.

The rules make the picture tougher. Tanzania are co-hosting the 2027 tournament with Kenya and Uganda and have already qualified. That leaves one ticket for the other three teams: only the highest-placed side among Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar will go through. Here are the Group L standings after two rounds:

  • Guinea-Bissau, 6 points: beat Tanzania 2-0 and Nigeria 3-0.
  • Nigeria, 3 points: beat Madagascar 2-1, lost 3-0 to Guinea-Bissau.
  • Madagascar, 1 point: drew 1-1 with Tanzania.
  • Tanzania, 1 point: already qualified as co-hosts.

The friendly against Russia, a 3-3 draw in Nizhny Novgorod on October 6, gave Eric Chelle plenty to think about. Kelechi Iheanacho scored his 15th goal for Nigeria, 19-year-old Benfica youngster Peter Edokpolor made an impressive debut, and Akor Adams scored a late equaliser.

With Victor Osimhen missing the October window through injury, Chelle used the game to look at his next wave of players. Osimhen is now back playing for Galatasaray, and reports in Nigeria expect him to return for the Tanzania games. It gave a clear view of who could strengthen Nigeria’s AFCON 2027 qualifiers campaign when it matters most.

The November window, from November 9 to 17, will be a defining test. Nigeria host Tanzania first and then travel for the return fixture. The campaign ends in March 2027 with an away game in Madagascar and a home match against Guinea-Bissau.

Depth will matter in a double-header, and the Super Eagles squad for November will need far more defensive discipline than it showed against Guinea-Bissau.

Odds for both November games will move with every squad announcement and injury update. Fans can follow the AFCON qualifiers odds to see how the market rates each side before kick-off, and keep up with team news on the go in the AvaBet app. Fixtures, results and live markets are all on the AvaBet website.

The November games will decide what Nigeria take into the spring. Six points against Tanzania will not guarantee qualification, but dropping points would leave Nigeria relying on Guinea-Bissau to slip up.
