One cap Nigeria international forward Josh Maja scored twice for Le Havre in a seven goal thriller which Marseille edged 4-3, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.
Marseille ran into a comfortable 4-0 lead and were cruising to a routine win with Nigeria international midfielder Tochukwu Nnadi anchoring things in the middle.
Marseille were on the front foot from the start, leading after five minutes when CJ Egan-Riley headed in from a corner. Timothy Weah doubled the lead on 33 minutes, pinching the ball high and finishing low for 2-0 at half-time.
After the interval, Igor Paixão struck from a rehearsed set-piece on 50 minutes and Himad Abdelli added a fourth five minutes later with a driven effort. At 4-0 the match looked settled, but Le Havre’s changes gave them a second wind.
In the second half substitute Maja converted a penalty on 77 minutes to get the comeback started. Mouhamed N’Diaye then headed in on 86 minutes to make it 4-2 and set up a tense finale. Maja rose again on 89 minutes, nodding in Kaito Mizuta’s excellent cross to bring it to 4-3.
A stoppage-time VAR check for a potential Le Havre penalty ended with no award, and Marseille finally exhaled.
For Maja whose sole cap for Nigeria came in the 2-2 draw against Ukraine in 2019 under former coach Gernot Rohr, joined the Ligue 1 side in the summer and he now has three goals in eight games.
