The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has informed the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) that the U20 team should be on standby for a spot in the U20 AFCON which serves as qualifiers for the U20 World Cup, OwnGoalNigeria.com can exclusively reveal.
CAF arrived at the decision after Ghana the initial host of the tournament failed to meet up with the requirements meant to host the tournament. They will now lose the hosting right with a new host expected to be announced.
It was because of the fact that Ghana were that host that only one team qualified for the tournament from the WAFU B zone, where Ghana also played. Nigeria were beaten 1-4 by Burkina Faso in the final.
Only the winner was initially confirmed by CAF with the other slot in the zone going to the host Ghana, but since they are no longer the host Nigeria as beaten finalist will now take their spot.
