FC Porto President – We Don’t Need Nigerians, We Are Going To Take Advantage Of The Ones Here

0

President of FC Porto Pinto da Costa has ruled out any chance of the team signing promising Nigerian talent in the future, according to reports picked up by Owngoalnigeria.com online editor.

While analyzing the youth team set up at the Portuguese side, the president gave a damning verdict on signing Nigerian players for the youth team, as they could depart the team anytime.

Although he mentioned players from other countries, he was particular about Nigerians, which is not surprising considering the fact that they have as many as six Nigerians on their books.

” You can’t build an U-19 or B team based on Nigerians who are here one day and gone in the next. We’re going to take advantage of the ones born here instead of players from Nigeria, Malaysia, Mali, etc,” he said.

His statement has cast a huge doubt on the potential signing of Nigeria U-17 star Samuel Chukwueze even though a deal has been agreed already.

Presently Fidelis Irhene, Mikel Agu, Moses John, Chidozie Awaziem, Musa Yahaya and Chidera Ezeh are the Nigerians on the payroll of the club, although only Awaziem is in the first team at the moment.

Sokari won the man of the match award for his impressive display two weeks ago, and he picked up from where he left off against Tataouine by rounding up a well worked team effort with a low finish.

The 21 year old finished off a cross with aplomb in a flowing team move which saw Stephen Nyarko produce a stunning back heel to start the move. Sokari was substituted to a standing ovation.

In Israel Beitar Tel Aviv Ramla Nigerian forward Jacob Njoku scored his sixth goal of the season in all competition in their 2-1 win over Maccabi Shaaraim. A result that brightens their chances of gaining promotion to the top flight in Israel.

However the performance of the day was delivered by Mikel Agu in the colours of Vitoria Setubal in their 3-0 win over Tondela. The FC Porto loanee covered almost every blade of grass on the pitch for his team, and despite picking up a yellow card, he was by far among the best players for his team.

Agents Offer Money To Get Their Players Invited To Super Eagles Camp – Former Coach Admits

Former Nigeria captain Daniel Amokachi has said the practice of local coaches being bribed to invite players onto the country’s national teams is endemic.

Despite no one being found guilty of the accusation, there have long been suspicions it happens in Nigeria.

Previously, Amokachi worked as an assistant to former Super Eagles coaches Stephen Keshi (2011-15), Shaibu Amodu (2008-10) and Austin Eguavoen (2005-2007).

He says that all three used to complain about the practice.

“Agents always come to give money for their players to be invited to camp,” said Amokachi. “Does it have to be so?”

“Every time Amodu would tell me: ‘Can you listen to these useless agents that are calling me? They want to give me US$10,000, $20,000 and $30,000 to bring their players in.

“But he’s a man of integrity and wouldn’t take it. I worked with Keshi and it was the same scenario. With Eguavoen, it was the same.

“If these three names mentioned had not had integrity, definitely they would have fallen victim.

“Someone accused me lately, (saying) ‘the reason Nigeria did not qualify is because all you coaches demand bribes.

“You understand? I felt the pain.

“So if he is painting me as a bad egg among a few, then somebody like me cannot be quiet about it.

“Coaches will confirm people bring money but they will not say it.

“Players will confess, even assistant coaches will confirm this thing is going on, but the system does not allow you because a lot of us are hungry and afraid that ‘when I say this, I will never be near that office again.'”

Mohammed Sanusi, the NFF General Secretary, rejected Amokachi’s allegations while also calling on him to furnish the organisation with more information.

“I think it is unfair to make such allegations and not mention the names of those involved,” Sanusi told BBC Sport.

“It would be fair if he mentions the names of those who have either approached him or approached some people to give them money. He should also mention people who he knew collected money.

“I think that will be the best way to go about it.

“I have not heard of this issue from any quarter and I can tell you that the NFF will not tolerate this kind of behaviour. If Amokachi has evidence of what he has said he should bring it forward and we will take it up.”
