Saturday games in the English Premier League (EPL) saw four Nigeria internationals in actions, with contrasting fortunes for the quartet in different games.

Genort Rohr Wants To Build Super Eagles Defence Around German Born Nigerian Defender

According to reports gathered by Owngoalnigeria.com newly appointed coach of the Super Eagles Genort Rohr, has outlined his plans on how he intends to fix up the Super Eagles defence.

The German coach will arrive Nigeria tomorrow ahead of Nigeria dead rubber AFCON 2017 tie against Tanzania, but has already outlined the one area of the team he think needs urgent attention.

Rohr during the week cited the defence of the Nigerian team as the one area of the team that needs urgent attention, pointing out that for Nigeria to do well at the Russia 2018 World Cup qualifiers, fixing up the defence is key.

Henry Chukwuemeka Onyekuru is not one of the names Nigerians are familiar with when discussing the country’s talent in the top flight league in Belgium.

However, the 19 year old who plays for newly promoted KAS Eupen has taken to life in the top flight of Belgium football with the ease of a veteran, which has put him as an early contender for one of the revelations of the season.

Onyekuru scored his second goal of the season from the first five games in Eupen’s 3-2 loss to Sporting Charleroi, most importantly his second goal in three games.

Last season he scored just six times for Eupen in the second division from a total of 19 games but he is four goals away from that tally after just 5 top flight games.

He is one of the three Nigerians on the books of the club, the other two been midfielder Anthony Bassey and George Jamabo.

Former Arsenal fans favourite Kanu Nwankwo has urged Manager Arsene Wenger to invest more in quality players despite the arrival of Shkrodan Mustafi and Lucas Perez.

Liverpool highly rated teen prospect Ovie Ejaria left the home of his former side Arsenal with smiles all over his face after helping Liverpool U23s to a 3-1, despite a second half stunning strike by fellow Nigerian teen Chuba Akpom for Arsenal.

Ejaria,18, was the among the shining light for the Liverpool main team during their pre season tour and games. He was widely tipped for a role in the main team this season but an injury picked up in one of the pre season games against Chelsea slowed down his progress.

In his first appearance of the season, he was on from the start for the U23s and although he failed to find the back, he showed the handlers of his former team, how well he has grown since leaving the team with a commanding display in the midfield.

The other Nigerian on the opposite side Chuba Akpom who has been around the first team of Arsenal and sat on the bench for their first two Premier League games crashed in an effort off the bar into the Liverpool net to bring scores to 2-1, but was helpless as the young Reds scored a third to kill off the gunners.

English Premiership giants Liverpool have announced via official channel that Nigeria youth international Taiwo Awoniyi will spend the rest of the season with Dutch side NEC Nijmegen.

However the move is subject to a work permit been granted to the 19 year old, who joined Liverpool last summer after a whirlwind year with the Nigeria U20s and 23s.

The lanky forward was a late omission from the Nigeria Olympic team to the Rio 2016 Olympics, making the team as an alternate player but he had to leave to sort out his club future.

Last season he was on loan to German second division side FSV Frankfurt where he scored once in 14 games for the team that eventually got relegated to the third division.

His present loan team started their campaign in the Dutch league by picking up a win and two draws from their first three games. Awoniyi will be in the stands when they play AZ Alkmaar on Sunday.

The U23s of QPR defeated their Ipswich Town counterpart 4-1 in a U23 Professional Development League tie at Loftus Road, with the Nigerian teen duo of Eberechi Eze and Romeo Akinola playing a pivotal role in the victory.

Eze joined the Championship side from Milwall in July. The 18 year old has taken to life in his new surroundings quite well, scoring on his debut against Southampton which he followed up with another against Ipswich Town in today’s game.

He scored the 4th goal in their 4-1 win over Ipswich Town, taking his tally for his new side to two in two games for the U23s of the promotion chasing English Championship team.

Signed on a one year deal, he is an attacking midfielder who can also play behind the main striker and at QPR he has grown in leap and bound playing as the arrow head of the Development Team.

Akinola on his part showed the reason why he has progressed greatly through the ranks at QPR, with a performance reminisce of his strong showing last season for the Reserves when he emerged as one of the top prospect in the youth ranks of QPR.

The duo are both eligible for Nigeria and England although they are yet to be called up by either of the nations.

Genort Rohr: Super Eagles Defence Need Works, We Must Work On That Area

Newly appointed Technical Adviser of the Nigeria senior national team Genort Rohr says fixing up the defence line of the Super Eagles is his main priority ahead of the World Cup 2018 qualifiers which begins in October.

The German will arrive Nigeria on Sunday ahead of Nigeria’s dead rubber AFCON 2017 qualifiers against Tanzania in Uyo on the 3rd of September, but the former Niger and Mali coach already has his eyes on the 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

Nigeria is in group B alongside Zambia, Cameroon and Algeria and Rohr believes fixing up the defence of the Super Eagles is key to their aspirations of qualifying for the World Cup in Russia.

Rohr made this known in an exclusive interview with respected Nigerian journalist Osasu Obayiuwana from his base in France.

” We’ve got a lot of work to do to get Super Eagles ready for the World Cup qualifuers. If the Nigerian team is to effectively compete, it must have a good defence. We are certainly going to work on that area” He told Obayiuwana.

” I watched the Olympic team and was very impressed by their performance, in spite of the initial problems. I will be watching league matches across Nigeria to search for talent, in addition to using players in Europe”.

Manager of Manchester City Pep Guardiola has confirmed that Nigerian forward Kelechi Iheanacho is fit and ready to play in this weekend English Premier League tie against West Ham, despite leaving the pitch on a stretcher on Wednesday against Steaua Bucuresti.

The 19 year old went to the ground unchallenged while chasing a loose ball, and appeared to be close to losing consciousness before an opponent came to his aid, ahead of the arrival of the medical team.

He was subsequently substituted and taken out on a stretcher, leading to speculations that he could be set for an extended spell on the touch line.

Reports in Nigeria also increased the fears over his injury, with many media outlet suggesting he could be miss Nigeria AFCON 2017 dead rubber qualifiers against Tanzania in Uyo.

However, Iheanacho was among the 30 players in training ahead of Sunday’s clash against West Ham United according to manager Pep Guardiola.

Nigeria youth international Nathan Oduwa was among the top performers for the U23s of English Premiership side Tottenham Hotspur in their 2-1 win over their Derby County counterparts.

Oduwa, who is yet to sign an extension to his contract that has just 12 months to run, was lively all through the tie, making himself a menace to the backline of the host, who found it hard to cope with his all round display.

The Nigerian won the penalty from which Spurs scored their opening goal after his quick feet saw him go past his marker, who had no choice but to foul the 20 year old in the box.
