The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced the former coach of Mali Eric Chelle as the new coach of the senior national team of Nigeria ahead of the resumption of the world cup qualifiers, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Chelle was the top pick of the technical committee of the NFF from a three man shortlist, with the coach getting the backing of the NFF president Ibrahim Musa Gusau this time around after rejecting his appointment in July last year.

We exclusively reported the appointment of the coach , but in a remarkable twist of events Gusau was said to have vetoed his appointment in favour of a more glamorous option in Herve Renard, who turned his back on the job after talks and contract presentation.

Gusau was disappointed with the decision of the Frenchman and rather than go back to Chelle, he went for German coach Bruno Labbaddia who was announced as the coach by the NFF, but a breakdown in talks over payment of his taxes brought the decision to a premature end.

Austine Eguavoen the technical director of the NFF guided the team successfully through the AFCON qualifiers in interim capacity, and was heavily involved in the process to get a permanent coach which Chelle finally got the mod.

We gathered his optimism on helping the Super Eagles qualify for the world cup despite their precarious position of 5th in their 6 team group played heavily in his favor.

The coach who led Mali to a 2-0 win over Super Eagles in a friendly game in March last year also impressed with his knowledge of the Nigerian team , and explained what he intends to do in order to get them back on track in the world cup qualifiers.

The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation has endorsed the recommendation of its Technical and Development Sub-Committee for the appointment of Mr. Éric Sékou Chelle as Head Coach of Nigeria’s senior men national football team, Super Eagles.

At its meeting held in Abuja on Thursday, 2nd January 2025, the NFF Technical and Development Sub-Committee had recommended the appointment of former Coach of the senior men national team of Mali as the new Head Coach of the Super Eagles. This recommendation was on Tuesday, 7th January endorsed by the NFF Executive Committee.

Chelle, who won five caps for the Aiglons of Mali and coached clubs such as GS Consolat, FC Martigues, Boulogne and MC Oran, has been Head Coach of the Aiglons since 2022.

At the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Cote d’Ivoire, Chelle’s Mali came very close to a place in the semi-finals, losing to hosts and eventual winners Cote d’Ivoire 2-1 after extra time, after leading by a lone goal until the final minute of regulation time.

The 47-year-old featured for Martigues, Valenciennes, Lens, Istres and Chamois Niortais in France during his playing career.

His appointment is with immediate effect, and he has the responsibility of guiding the Super Eagles to earn a ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals, with the next round of matches (Matchdays 5 & 6) taking place in March.

The duo of coach Daniel Ogunmodede and Fidelis Ilechukwu successfully ended Nigeria’s wait to qualify for the tournament meant for players based in their various domestic league in Africa with a 3-1 aggregate win over Ghana.

Despite the feat, Gusau told the official media channel of the NFF that the duo will give way for a new coach who will also be in charge of the Super Eagles, and is expected to be known soon.

” Nigerians will know the coach of the Super Eagles very soon. I am sure you are aware that the technical committee sat on Thursday to discuss about it and I am just waiting for their report. If we go through the report and with the approval of the board, we move on, but definitely Nigeria will know who the coach of the Super Eagles, who will steer affairs of the team going into the world cup qualifiers”, Gusau explained.

” But the basic thing is that it is going to be very very soon because we are all concerned and we want whoever is going to take charge of the team to start immediately and that is why we came up with a policy, that whichever coach we appoint to manage the Super Eagles will be the one to manage the CHAN Eagles.

“So therefore you can not be given a team comprising home based players and at the end of the tournament you come and tell us that you don’t see one or two players that you feel can be injected into the senior national team.

“You saw what happened for them to qualify for the next CHAN against Ghana. A lot of people look at it that there is hope for Nigerian football because we actually saw the Nigerian spirit in the boys especially the match they played in Uyo.

” People are just talking about what happened in Uyo and not what happened in Ghana. It was not easy to get a draw there”, he stated.

He rounded up by saying the team will spend the next two weeks at their camp in Nigeria in preparation for the tournament, before traveling for a training tour from where they will arrive at the venue of the tournament in February.
