The decision by head coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Eric Chelle has termed his decision to hand Benjamin Fredrick his competitive debut in the world cup qualifiers at the expense of team’s captain William Troost-Ekong as the bravest move of his coaching career so far, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Fredrick fresh from being voted as the club’s U23 player’s player of the season was handed a call up to the Nigerian team, after captain Ahmed Musa left the camp for Nigeria.

It could have ended his reign as coach of Nigeria and probably destroy the boy”, a source close to the coach said.

” He (Chelle) was sure of his conviction even when senior players in the team felt otherwise and protested the decision. He stood by his decision believing that it was the best for the game”.

Babayaro – There Shouldn’t Be A Debate For Super Eagles Number 1 Goalkeeper

0

Former Nigeria international defender Celestine Babayaro says there shouldn’t be a debate on who should be the first choice goalkeeper of the senior national team of Nigeria in the absence of Stanley Nwabali.

Nwabali has been inactive since mutually terminating his contract with South Africa side Chippa United after the AFCON in January.

Head coach Eric Chelle handed a recall to Maduka Okoye alongside the duo of Francis Uzoho and Adebayo Adeleye for the recently concluded four team tournament in Turkey.

All three goalkeepers played in the tournament, with Okoye in goal in the 2-1 win over Iran while Uzoho was substituted for Adeleye after picking up a knock in the 2-2 draw against Jordan.

Chelle’s decision kept the debate about who should be the first choice, but Babayaro says it shouldn’t be that way with Okoye who has kept three consecutive clean sheets in the Serie A available.

” This shouldn’t be a debate if you ask me because you have a goalkeeper in a top European League who is available. He was not around due to previous issues but now that he is back give him his due. It’s very simple”, he told OwnGoalNigeria.com.
