We Had Problems With Osimhen, Others But Never With Sadiq – Peseiro’s Assistant Speaks On Super Eagles

0

The most circulated news after the senior national team of Nigeria friendly games against Ghana and Mali respectively has been the fallout between the head coach Finidi George and some players of the team, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Finidi drew the ire of some players of the team who he left on the bench for the entire duration of both games, and even the team’s AFCON star Ademola Lookman was unhappy that he got sparse game time in both games.

Lookman approached Finidi after the game to voice his unhappiness, but he wasn’t the only one as three other players refused to shake the hand of the coach over what they term disrespectful treatment because he didn’t offer any explanation on why they didn’t get to play.

In the wake of the fallout which has dimmed the chances of the coach of Enyimba getting the job on a permanent basis, an assistant of erstwhile coach Jose Peseiro has lifted the lid on how they managed fallout with some players during their time at the helm.

” I saw the report on the fallout and it’s very normal. We had a couple as well but we had to be smart about it especially in the build up to the AFCON”, he told OwnGoalNigeria.com.

” There was a situation with Victor Osimhen before the AFCON, Ademola Lookman in the second game and William Troost-Ekong just before the AFCON. I can remember Kelechi Iheanacho also had some sort of disagreement with the coach. Even Terem Moffi but it’s all was in good faith and for the good of team”.

The assistant who shares a very good relationship with us was asked on if there was an issue at any point in time with Real Sociedad striker Sadiq Umar, who is a target of some section of the media.

” Never before did he act in a negative way. He is a team player and a very good guy. When he got injured before he AFCON the coach kept in touch with him because we really had him in our plans. It’s untrue, wicked and malicious to say he got into the team because of influence from the NFF.  He is Peseiro’s kind of player and he plays in a top team in a top league*, he rounded up saying.

Guardiola’s Former Assistant Sees Himself As Favourite For Super Eagles Job

The race for who will be the next coach of the senior national team of Nigeria following the exit of Jose Peseiro will hot up this month with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) expected to conduct interviews for shortlisted candidates, OwnGoalNigeria.com can exclusively reveal.

Peseiro vacated his role as coach of the senior national team of Nigeria after leading the team to second place finish. No agreement was found on plans to extend his deal despite meeting the target of getting to at least the semi final of the tournament in Cote d’Ivoire.

His assistant Finidi George handled the team in their recent friendly games where they defeated Ghana 2-1 before bowing 1-2 to Mali in their second friendly game in the Moroccan city of Marrakesh.

Finidi is expected to stay in a role with the new set up expected to be known this month. For now we exclusively gathered that the race is down to two men in Toni Conceição and Domenec Torrent if the NFF stick to their idea of hiring a foreign coach.

Torrent who is the longest serving assistant of celebrated Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola is however confident that he stands a good chance of getting the nod to replace Peseiro.

As a matter of fact, we gathered he has started working on the team’s opponents when the qualification for the 2026 World Cup resumes. He also watched the both friendly games of the team.

Some members of the NFF are said to have hinted some players of the team that they will have a new coach who is likely a Spaniard by the end of this month.

Revealed – Paris 2026 Olympics Makes It Impossible For NFF’s Wildcard To Be New Coach Of Super Eagles

0

The race for who will be the next coach of the senior national team of Nigeria will go down to the wire next month when a decision is expected to be made by the technical committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), OwnGoalNigeria.com can exclusively reveal.

Already a seven man shortlist which constitutes three indigenous and four foreign coaches has been drawn up by the committee ahead of interview for the post, which was made vacant by the departure of Jose Peseiro who led the team to a second spot finish at the AFCON. He left after the expiration of his contract as coach last month.

Despite having the shortlist, the NFF were willing to go out of it, and get a coach which was why they approached Hervé Renard the incumbent coach of the women national team of France as revealed by France based news outlet L’equipe.

The move was made possible after a representative of the coach contacted a top shot of the NFF to intimate them of the interest of the coach in taking over the vacant managerial role of the Super Eagles, to keep alive his dream of going to a third world cup.

However the major stumbling block is that he will only be free for the Super Eagles job after the Paris 2024 Olympics, which runs from the 26th of July to the 11th of August. Around which the Super Eagles would have played their next two games in the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.

We gathered that the NFF are speeding up the process of having a coach in place before the resumption of the qualifiers effectively ruling out Renard, who led the Zambia national team and that of Cote d’Ivoire to AFCON glory in 2012 and 2015 respectively.

Players Clash: NFF Fears Appointing Findi As Super Eagles Main Coach Will Be Counter Productive Like Oliseh

0

The hierarchy of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) will announce a new permanent coach for the senior national team of Nigeria next month following the departure of Jose Peseiro upon the expiration of his contract last month, OwngoalNigeria.com reports.

Super Eagles played two international friendly games during the break beating Ghana 2-1 before succumbing to a 0-2 defeat to Mali in the second friendly game. Peseiro’s assistant Finidi George handled both games in interim capacity.

Finidi is one of the contenders for the job on a permanent deal, but he hasn’t done himself any favours with reports of how he handled his player’s selection and management.

The Enyimba FC of Aba coach only used two substitutes in the loss to Mali and of the 23 players invited for both games, six of them in Nathan Tella, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Alhassan Yusuf, Sadiq Umar, Olorunleke Ojo and Francis Uzoho didn’t get to play any minute in both games.

His decision made Ademola Lookman to question why he got few minutes in both games, despite his performance at the Africa Cup of Nations, where he was the top scorer for the Nigerian team with four goals.

” Any Super Eagles coach must be a good man manager because of the ego of most players in the team. It was that area that Peseiro struggled it but later understood it hence his bond with Ahmed Musa at the AFCON”, a board member of the NFF revealed.

” In the last two games of the Super Eagles. We had too many disgruntled voices on how the team selection was made and also man management. It’s a friendly game and we are supposed to see new players stake a claim for a spot particularly the last window before the world cup qualifiers resumes.

” All we saw was the same players we have known and not like we won both games. So the idea of playing the games was lost and nothing came out of the decision of the coach. He didn’t do his chances any good and the fear is that there could be more clashes in the future if he stays in the job permanently. Something we experienced during the time of Sunday Oliseh”, he rounded up saying.

Nigerian Players in English Leagues: Are Their Teams Wise Betting Choices?

0

Throughout the years, there has always been a steady influx of Nigerian players making their way to the English Premier League. Some of the greatest players to ever pull on the Super Eagles national shirt have performed in England’s top division, and some of those have earned silverware.

This impact of Nigerian players on the Premier League has dwindled somewhat in recent years, especially when it comes to earning a place at the top clubs. But some high-profile Nigerian players are still strutting their stuff in the EPL and their names will pop up now and again in football match prediction previews.

Betting on Teams with Nigerian Players

A player’s nationality, of course, is not something to base a football bet on. However, every player who steps onto the pitch will influence the outcome of a match in one way or another. In the bigger picture, they will, in turn, influence what unfolds throughout a season.

The current standing of Nigerian players in the 2023/24 Premier League mostly focuses on teams fighting for survival. But that means that the bulk of team betting, where Nigerian players are in the squad, could still have some value.

It could be relying on someone like Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi, for example, to be good enough to keep his club in the top flight.

Who Is Playing in England?

Based on the squad selection that Nigeria took to AFCON earlier this year, the Premier League was well represented. Here’s who made the squad from EPL clubs:

●     Calvin Bassey – Fulham

●     Gabriel Osho – Luton Town

●     Frank Onyeka – Brentford

●     Taiwo Awoniyi – Nottingham Forest

●     Ola Aina – Nottingham Forest

There were four other players involved from England’s second tier, the Championship. That included Leicester City duo Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi. The others were West Brom’s Semi Ajayi and Southampton’s Joe Aribo.

With Leicester looking likely to earn promotion back to the EPL, that could easily bump up the number of Nigerian players in the top flight next season. Currently, though, a bet on Leicester, who are odds-on favourites to earn promotion, could make some sense depending on their value in the market at the time.

You can go a little deeper with that, as both the aforementioned Southampton and West Brom are in with a chance of reaching the promotion playoffs. So wagers on them either for a Top 6 Finish or To Win Promotion could be approached.

Betting and Nigerian Players

Players like Iheanacho and Awoniyi, who are strikers, raises the opportunity to look at player performance-based betting markets. That could be something like backing Awoniyi as the Last Goalscorer in a Premier League match.

There’s First Goalscorer, Anytime Goalscorer, To Score 2+ goals and those markets can even be merged into Bet Builders too. Whether they make sensible choices for a bet, will depend on the particular player’s form, the difficulty of the match and of course the general form of the team.

It’s worth noting that Nigeria’s superstar striker Victor Osimhen is a transfer target for many of England’s leading clubs, so he could also join the ranks of Super Eagles in the EPL next term. Should Osimhen arrive in England, then it would be with one of the top six elite clubs.

So he could be a huge influence on a team getting involved in a title race there, and potentially in the UEFA Champions League. Osimhen himself would probably draw a lot of interest to finish the season as the league’s Top Goalscorer too.

In Summary

That’s the thing with betting, it is all about perspective. When looking at specific team betting for a club to achieve something, whether that is To Be Relegated or To Win Promotion, there are many other factors to put together.

There have been some great Nigerian players in the Premier League, like Arsenal’s Kanu Nwankwo who was part of their ‘Invincibles’ side that won the 2003/04 title, and Chelsea’s Jon Obi Mikel who had many great duels against the Gunners.

It’s great to see that quality Nigerian players are still being produced and are wanted in what is regarded as the best domestic league in the world. The more that happens, the further the status of the Nigerian national team will be raised, which in turn would bring some fascinating betting opportunities come the next editions of the World Cup and Afcon.

Lookman Lead Protest Against “Disrespectful Act” By Findi In Super Eagles’s Defeat To Mali

0

The stand in coach of the senior national team of Nigeria for their recently concluded friendly games against Ghana and Mali respectively didn’t cover himself in glory with his conduct, OwnGoalNigeria.com can exclusively reveal.

Former Nigeria international Finidi George was handed the chance to lead the team in the two games which ended in a 2-1 win against Ghana and a 0-2 defeat to Mali in their second game in the Moroccan city of Marrakech.

Finidi was assistant to head coach Jose Peseiro who left upon the expiration of his contract at the end of last month. He is also a candidate for the job on a permanent basis, but it seems he didn’t quite get along with some players in the team during the games which he handled as head coach.

” Ademola Lookman was particularly furious and he was the only one who approached the coach to know why he got sparse minutes after what he did at the AFCON. But I can tell you he wasn’t the only one who was hurt”, a souce told OwnGoalNigeria.com.

” I think most players know that they won’t play all the time, but it’s a friendly game and you can’t bench a player who left his club for international games in two straight matches. He made just two substitutes against Mali when he could make five. I don’t think any coach in world football has made just two subs in a friendly game before now”, he started further.

Speaking on if the coach communicated to the players who didn’t get to play a minute out of the two games like Sadiq Umar, Nathan Tella, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Alhassan Yusuf, Francis Uzoho and Olorunleke Ojo he said nothing of such happened.

” There is a way you will tell a man to go to hell and he will look forward to the journey. That didn’t happen with any of the players to the best of my knowledge. The frustration was why three players snubbed him when he wanted to have a handshake after the game against Mali. They felt disrespected and rightly so in my opinion”, he concluded.

We sought to hear from a member of the backroom team on if what we heard is true but he stayed coy saying there was too much on the head of the coach, which must have led to some of the issues we raised.

” Remember he worked without any assistants. So he is responsible for almost everything for the two games. It is too much work for one man and naturally that will lead to a gap in communication. Finidi is a nice easy going man and wouldn’t act disrespectful to anyone on purpose”, he stated.

Riding the Red Sand: Adventures in African Moto Travel

0

Born and bred in the heartwarming city of Reggio Emilia, we, Jaxon and Craig, are impassioned souls with an undying zeal for travel and exploration. Documenting our escapades has become a part of our lives.

The winds of April 2023 bore witness to a dream turned reality – a riveting motorcycle odyssey across the cradle of civilization, Africa. It wasn’t just any trip; it was a pilgrimage with a purpose, a venture in support of a noble NGO. This expedition was more than just sightseeing; it was a confluence of our deepest desires with the tenets of giving back.

With the spirit of philanthropy fueling our engines, we hold a fervent hope that this is just the genesis of many more ventures to come. Join us on our mission, as we aim to stitch together the tapestry of travel with the threads of charitable work, creating a mosaic of adventures that resonates with purpose.

Preparation

Setting off on our motorcycle odyssey across Africa was a significant undertaking. This trip was more than an adventure; it was a mission with purpose. Our aim was to traverse the African landscape on two wheels while also contributing positively. To fulfill this dual objective, we reached out to the ‘Bambini nel Deserto’ NGO to explore opportunities for assistance, and that’s how we learned about the needs of a community in Casamance, a remote area in southern Senegal.

We must admit that it was not only humanistic considerations that pushed us into Africa moto adventure. We love watching stream MotoGP and have always dreamed of riding desert Africa. To our surprise, we didn’t even know how to watch MotoGP during our trip. But a solution was found and during breaks from our Africa enduro tours we used a VPN. We felt like we were in MotoGP.

To our delight, the fundraising efforts exceeded all expectations. Our initial target was €5,000, sufficient to commence the enterprise. However, the overwhelming support helped us gather €8,000.

Start of African Motorcycle Tour

As darkness blankets the city of Tangier, our excitement is palpable despite the late hour of our arrival. Our itinerary is set; Marrakesh is calling us, approximately 550 kilometers to the interior. In the early morning coolness near the ocean’s edge, we don our winter wear, ready to face the crisp air. However, as we draw further from the coast and closer to the heart of Marrakesh, the air warms and the essence of inland Morocco welcomes us. It’s a steady ride across the evolving landscape, and by the time the sun begins to wake around 6 p.m., we’ve reached our daily milestone.

Conquest of the Atlantic Ocean

On the following morning, our adventure leads us southward from Agadir to the coastal haven of Tifnit, a quaint fishing community nestled along the Atlantic’s shores. The scenery during our ride is nothing short of breathtaking. With the sprawling ocean ceaselessly stretching to our right, we’re accompanied by the gentle oceanic breeze and a landscape that undergoes a dramatic transition from verdant greens to earthen hues. Gone are the days of cruising on the smooth tarmac of the highway; we now find ourselves on a rugged coastal road where domesticated life roams free—goats and cows wander at liberty, and we catch our first glimpses of dromedaries in the wild.

Next Stop Adventure Riding – Legzira Arch

It was an experience of a lifetime when we made our way to Tan-Tan Plage, knowing fully that a pitstop at the awe-inspiring Legzira Arch was essential. While we’ve scrolled through countless images of this stunning natural wonder, nothing could prepare us for the real deal. Witnessing the sandy grandeur and cruising beneath it on our faithful motorbike stirred within us an outpouring of sheer bliss—tears of joy were undeniable, even if hidden behind our helmets.

Dakhla

Rising with the sun, we set our sights on Dakhla, feeling the vast expanse of the desert draw near, yet the sea remains our constant companion to the right, its winds fierce and unyielding. Our journey leads us to the enchanting terrain of the Dakhla Valley, where towering dunes capture our imagination, instilling a sense of solitude in this untouched wilderness. No other soul in sight, no trace of civilization – just us and the boundless sands. We pause, eager to capture this remarkable isolation, snapping countless photographs, our attire a testament to the relentless desert climate that envelops us.

Senegal

Drawing nearer to the city’s heart, the onset of street lights becomes a beacon in the desert vastness. The roads broaden in welcome, accommodating a vibrant tide of traffic as we seamlessly merge into Nouakchott’s dynamic pulse. Tonight, we find shelter and camaraderie within a local’s home, a hospitable arrangement where rented rooms offer more than just rest. Our evening unfolds in shared stories and a hearty meal, graciously prepared by our host. It’s interactions like these—with the warmth and traditions of the inhabitants—that embroider travel with the richness of genuine connection.

Arrival in Casamance

Traversing the wild heart of Casamance, our adventure leads us through a rugged savannah landscape. Construction abounds as efforts to carve out a main thoroughfare are in full swing, causing us to weave through a myriad of detours. Despite our best efforts, we invariably find ourselves enveloped in dust clouds, trailing the network of vermilion dirt roads that stretch out like veins amidst the vast golden terrain.

Each jolt and jostle from the recently overturned earth beneath our tires serves as a reminder of the challenges this path presents, not to mention the sweltering humidity that accompanies us like an unwelcome companion.

Seeking respite, we pause. Lunch is simple yet somehow extravagant—a spread of mangoes whose sweetness bursts forth, a delectable treasure procured from a roadside vendor. Sheltered by the grandeur of an ancient baobab, we’re transported to a scene straight out of the nature documentaries that once captivated us from the comfort of our living room. Yet here we are, truly immersed in the majesty of it all—monkeys frolic among the great tree’s limbs as we dine in the raw splendor of the savannah, fully present in the moment’s rugged beauty.

Conclusion

Our travels are drawing to a close; this is our final evening before the inevitable return. A bittersweet feeling envelops us as we prepare to depart for Dakar to hand over the motorcycle, signaling the end of our incredible voyage. Italy beckons from afar with the promise of home. Reflecting on the expansive journey behind us, Morocco’s tapestry of landscapes – from the bustling bazaars to the tranquil dunes, the sprawling savannah, and the welcoming village – imprints lasting memories. Tomorrow, we’ll be reluctantly heading to Dakar.

International Friendly: Super Eagles Beaten By Malian Eagles

0

The senior national team of Nigeria lost their second friendly game in Morocco after suffering a 0-2 defeat in the hands of Mali, four days after defeating Ghana 1-2 at the same venue, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Atalanta forward El Bilal Touré made the most of a horrendous pass from Chidozie Awaziem across the defence of Nigeria to put his side one goal up after 18 minutes. It remained that way until the half time break with Nigeria forced into making a substitution when Moses Simon went off injured.

Simon was subbed of for Cyriel Dessers after a collision in the box as he raced through to meet a pass from Alex Iwobi. Nigeria returned from the break the better side and almost drew level through Dessers.

He was put through by Kelechi Iheanacho but with only the goalkeeper at his mercy he skied his effort wide off the goal much to the bewilderment of his teammates, who felt he should have drawn them level.

Super Eagles were made to pay for that miss when Kamory Doumbia fired home a second for the Malian Eagles with three minutes left to play in the game. A goal which they thoroughly deserved due to their organization and approach.

Nigeria will now regroup in June for the world cup 2026 qualifiers, where they will take on South Africa with probably a new coach who will replace interim coach Finidi George, who was meant to stay in the role and prosecute the two friendly games for this month.

Exclusive: Super Eagles Lineup For Friendly Game Against Mali – Finidi Makes Four Changes To Starting XI

0

The interim head coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Finidi George has kept to his words by making changes to the starting lineup that defeated Ghana 2-1 ahead of today’s game against Mali, OwnGoalNigeria.com can exclusively reveal.

Finidi who is in temporary charge of the team maintained the same 3-5-2 formation the team played at the AFCON and also in the game against Ghana, but this time around Kelechi Iheanacho was handed the top striker’s role with Cyriel Dessers dropping to the bench.

The choice of Iheanacho of Sadiq Umar is a weird one but sources in the camp of the team said it is due to the fact that he is observing the ramadan fasting, hence isn’t fully recovered to start but he will play some parts in the game.

In the 3-5-2 formation, Iheanacho will play just ahead of Moses Simon who comes into the team. Kenneth Omeruo will wear the captain armband after missing the first game due to a knock. Jamilu Collins also comes in at left back in place of Bruno Onyemaechi.

Raphael Onyedika comes into the starting XI in the absence of Frank Onyeka, who is back in England due to a personal issue.

Starting XI: Stanley Nwabali, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Jamilu Collins, Semi Ajayi, Kenneth Omeruo, Chidozie Awaziem, Raphael Onyedika, Alex Iwobi, Moses Simon, Kelechi Iheanacho, Wilfred Ndidi.

Finidi Picks Spain’s Euro 2008 Winning Coach As His Role Model, Eyes Permanent Stay As Super Eagles Coach

0

Having completed a highly-talked-about African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Ivory Coast, Nigeria’s men’s national team, the Super Eagles, have found themselves in a transition period that could swing either side of a pendulum.

In the spotlight of this transition is Finidi George, head coach of Nigerian league champions Enyimba, and a key member of the Nigerian delegation that finished as runners-up at the 2023 AFCON tournament after losing 2-1 in the finals to hosts Ivory Coast.

Following the expiration of Jose Peseiro’s contract with the Super Eagles in March, and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) announcing that they were looking for a new man to take charge of the three-time African champions, George, who had served as an assistant under Peseiro, was tasked with managing the team on an interim basis.

“When I was told to take charge, it felt really good,” the former Ajax player told SportsBoom while preparing to engage the Super Eagles in training barely two days after leading them to defeat Ghana for the first time since 2006.

“I’m not new to the team, so it wouldn’t take me so long to adapt and try to do new things. I’ve been with the team for almost two years. I know all the players, their strengths, their weaknesses.

“I’m here to serve Nigeria, I’ve been called upon to do that and I will do it to my best capacity, the way I know how to do stuff. I will just take these 2 games and go back to my club. Whatever decision is taken after, so be it. I’m not under pressure to say ‘It must be me.”

Like La Roja, Like Super Eagles?

Considering the Super Eagles’ very-fluid-movement-and-exciting brand of football in their international friendly wins over Ghana, and Mali (a contrast to Nigeria’s rigid defensively-compact style employed at the AFCON), speculation already suggest that the Enyimba head coach might be the best option for a hire, for a cash-strapped Nigerian football governing body.

Already, George, who made it obvious that he is not trying to get ahead of himself, is dreaming of replicating the type of football he learnt from EURO 2008 winning coach Luis Aragones – while as a player at Real Betis and Mallorca – in the Super Eagles.

“I’ve worked with so many coaches,” he responded when asked about his coaching inspiration, “…from the late Luis Aragones to [Louis] van Gaal, Guus Hiddink, [Javier] Clemente, [Clemens] Westerhof.

Over the years, I’ve worked with these coaches, but I think it was the former Spanish coach, Aragones, that impacted me the most.

“Aragones’ way of managing players was fantastic because even those that were not playing were happy to be in the team. It is really difficult for a coach to achieve.

“Now, as a coach, I reflect and see it’s not an easy job, managing a team of 25+ players throughout a season without conflict, it’s fantastic,” George said with a light-hearted smile recollecting how he led Enyimba to their ninth NPFL title in just his second season in the league.

“Coming back to coach in the Nigerian League helped me, all credit to Enyimba. If I had been in Europe, that would be difficult.

“For now, my job is to finish the two games (against Ghana and Mali),” he added.

Finidi’s dream future

Speaking about legacies, George stated that if the NFF gave him the job after his ‘test period’, he would love to walk in the path of Stephen Keshi, the last manager to have had a trophy-laden tenure with the Super Eagles.

“I would like to emulate Keshi and win the AFCON. He won it as a player, and then as a coach which is fantastic. I would like to do the same. The first thing though, is to qualify first.”

While the main rounds of the next AFCON qualifiers might still be a while away from getting underway, the Super Eagles will be required back in action in June when they take on South Africa and Benin Republic in a continuation of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

It is uncertain though, what decisions – whether George continues managing the Super Eagles, or a new head coach gets hired – the NFF will take before then.
