Ndidi Makes Bold Claim For Super Eagles Number 10 Role After Another Assist For Leicester City

0

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will be back in action in October when they take on Saudi Arabia and Mozambique respectively in an international friendly game in Portugal, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Head coach of the Nigerian team Jose Peseiro has picked 25 players for the games and it includes Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi, who was the captain for the last game played by the team, the 6-0 win over Sao Tome and Principe in the qualifiers for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Playing in an advanced midfield role similar to the number ten role, the 26 year old has been a revelation this season for promotion chasing Leicester City following relegation from the English Premier League last season.

Yesterday in the English Championship, Ndidi bagged his fourth assist of the season setting up his fellow national team mate Kelechi Iheanacho for his side’s second goal in a 3-0 win over Preston North End.

Ahead of the Super Eagles games, head coach of the Nigerian team Jose Peseiro now has a major headache on his hands with Ndidi often deployed as a defensive midfielder for the team.

However in the last game of the team , he played further up the pitch and capped a wonderful performance with a through ball that led to a penalty for Nigeria. His form in that same role for his club could see him retain his spot and position in the friendly games.

Peseiro will likely play Ndidi alongside the returning Alex Iwobi with Frank Onyeka or Raphael Onyedika playing as the deepest of the midfield three.

Even In Training He Doesn’t Score – Coach Voices Concerns Over Super Eagles Striker

0

Head coach of top division Belgium side Gent has explained the reason why Nigeria international striker Gift Orban isn’t starting games at the club, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Orban became an instant hit last season following his January transfer deadline day move to Gent from Norwegian second division side Stabæk. He ended the season with 20 goals in 22 games and earned a first time call up to the senior national team of Nigeria, he hasn’t found that same rhythm this season with his last goal coming in August.

That form has cost him his spot in the team and ahead of their Europa Conference League game against Israeli side Maccabi Tel-Aviv, coach Hein Vanhaezebrouck defended his decision of not handing the Nigerian a starting spot anymore.

“Even during training, the balls no longer go in,” Hein Vanhaezebrouck told Het Laatste Nieuws. “Otherwise he would play more, right? People ask questions because he is on the bench. But it is very simple: someone who plays fantastically well in training always starts.”

“Everything worked last season, he was great. We also find it strange that it doesn’t work anymore. Look, you have moments in your career when things don’t go well. He is now in such a period.”

“That can also make him stronger. He is still young. Then this is not so obvious. Gift is an optimist – he keeps smiling. But of course it gets into his head,” concludes the coach .

Ex Germany Youth International Defender Might Not Make Super Eagles Debut Against Saudi Arabia

0

The chances of former Germany youth international Jordan Torunarigha making his Super Eagles debut in the Super Eagles upcoming friendly games against Saudi Arabia and Mozambique respectively has taken a big hit, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Nigeria will take on Saudi Arabia on the 13th of October before squaring up against Mozambique in three days time. The games are meant to prepare the team for the start of the World Cup qualifiers in November.

Super Eagles will begin their campaign against Lesotho at home before taking on Zimbabwe in their first away game of the series, it means head coach Jose Peseiro will treat the friendly games with the games in mind.

24 players were called to camp and it included former Germany youth international defender Jordan Torunarigha, who was handed a first time call up in the team’s final qualifiers game in the AFCON qualifiers but didn’t get to play.

He could be forced to wait a little longer with his club Gent confirming that he will miss tonight’s UEFA Conference League game against Israeli side Maccabi Tel-Aviv. They said he is out with an unspecified injury and no duration was stated for his return.

If out for long, he will miss the games and possibly the start of the world cup qualifiers, something that will put on hold his dream of playing for Super Eagles despite getting the all clear from FIFA.

FIFA Appoints Referees, VAR Officials For Super Eagles Vs Saudi Arabia Friendly Game

0

World football-governing body, FIFA has appointed Portuguese official Luis Godinho as referee for the international friendly match between three-time African champions Nigeria and Asian giants Saudi Arabia, coming up at the Estadio Municipal de Portimão next week Friday.

Godinho will be assisted by compatriots Bruno Jesus (assistant referee 1), Tiago Costa (assistant referee 2) and Miguel Noguera (fourth official) at the match kicking off by 5pm Portugal time (same time as in Nigeria).

Also appointed are Helder Carvalho to head the situation in the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) room, to be assisted by Bruno Vieira.

It is the second-ever clash between both countries. The Super Eagles and the Green Falcons battled to a scoreless draw in a pre-2010 FIFA World Cup friendly game at the Alpenstadion in Wattens, Austria on 25th May 2010.

The Eagles have another friendly encounter against the Mambas of Mozambique at the same venue on Monday, 16th October 2023, starting at 4pm.

NFF Explains Choice Of Mozambique Over European Countries For Friendly Against Super Eagles

0

The president of the Nigeria Football Federation Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau has revealed the reason why they decided that the Super Eagles should play Mozambique in their second friendly game in October.

Nigeria will begin the preparation for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers with a game against Saudi Arabia on the 13th of October in Portugal before taking on Mozambique three days later. The choice of the South African nation didn’t go down well with many Nigerians considering their low pedigree in African football.

While highlighting the achievements of the past year, which included a first-ever podium finish at the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup, quarter-final performance of the Flying Eagles at the FIFA U20 World Cup, qualification of the Super Eagles to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and best-ever outing by the Super Falcons at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, Gusau asserverated that the Board and Secretariat have worked in tandem to remove toxicity from the system and enable a more conducive environment for the game in the country.

“One of our priorities on coming into office was to ensure that the football environment was cleansed of so much toxicity that had threatened the health of the game and made some persons feel unwelcome in the system. We have tried our best to give everyone a sense of belonging with a policy of inclusiveness.

The NFF boss said his team will also not allow any FIFA window for friendly matches to go unutilized, further explain that Mozambique was picked as the next team after the game against Saudi Arabia, because they are from the same region as three of the Super Eagles opponents in the World Cup qualifiers.

“As you can see, we have arranged two matches for the Super Eagles in this month’s window, against Saudi Arabia and Mozambique. Mozambique is in southern Africa where three of our opponents in the World Cup qualifiers, namely Lesotho, Zimbabwe and South Africa also are. Playing Mozambique is a good opportunity for the team to have a sneak preview of what to expect against these three teams.”

Real Reason Why Musa, Ekong Were Not Listed In Super Eagles Squad For Upcoming Friendly Games

0

The reason behind the decision of the head coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Jose Peseiro to leave out the duo of Ahmed Musa and William Troost-Ekong from upcoming friendly games has been made known to OwnGoalNigeria.com.

Their names was conspicuously missing from the list of players made public by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) ahead of the games against Saudi Arabia on the 13th of October and four days later against Mozambique in Portugal.

We gathered, the decision to leave out the captain and his vice of for different reasons. Ekong was left out as he appears to have lost the faith of Peseiro who has taken a liking for Semi Ajayi, because he fits his philosophy of trying to play from the back.

Ekong isn’t all that comfortable with the ball at his feet with some of the Super Eagles most comfortable wins under the coach coming in his absence. The Portuguese coach wants to build a new center defence partnership around Ajayi and Calvin Bassey.

For Musa, we reliably gathered that he was left out on his permission as he is still yet to get back to full fitness after recovering from the injury that has kept him out during the first game of the season for his Turkish side Sivasspor.

While Musa is sure of making the AFCON squad if he stays fit, the same can’t be said about Ekong as the duo of Jordan Torunarigha and Kenneth Omeruo are seen as better back up option to the anointed partnership of Bassey and Ajayi.

I Have Decided To Play For Super Eagles Not England- New Bayer Leverkusen Star Winger Reveals

0

Bayer Leverkusen summer signing Nathan Tella has declared his desire to join his teammate Victor Boniface in the senior national team of Nigeria rather than wait for a call up from England, OwnGoalNigeria.comreports.

The 24 year old was signed from Southampton by the German side after an extra ordinary year on loan to Burnley last season, where he played a huge role in ensuring that they gain promotion to the English Premier League with 17 goals and five assists.

€18m was what was reportedly paid as his transfer fee with coach Xavi Alonso a huge fan of his style of play, the idea however is to slowly integrate him into the team and his new surroundings, hence the reason why he has so far played just two games in the Bundesliga.

At international level, he is eligible for England and Nigeria but in an interview with German publication Bild, he revealed he has made up his mind to represent Nigeria, although there has been no contact with the national team selectors of the West African country.

“If I get the chance to play for Nigeria, I would be more than happy and would accept it. I have also already told my parents and friends that I would do this”, he said.

“You won’t just be nominated, you have to work out and earn it. I want to prove myself here if I get the chance to play. I would like to develop myself further, help the team and the club – should a call come for an international vocation, that would be a bonus.”

“I have always said in the last three or four years that Nigeria is a big part of my life – even though I have been an ‘England boy’ from London all my life.”
