I Can’t Be Assistant To Rohr – Amuneke Hits Back At Super Eagles German Coach

0

Former Nigeria U17 coach Emmanuel Amuneke has denied suggestions that he was keen on working as assistant to coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Gernot Rohr.

Amuneke as exclusively reported by this portal was offered to the German coach as an assistant but the coach turned down the suggestion insisting on having Salisu Yusuf back.

Yusuf was suspended from all football activities for 18 months following his implication in a cash for spot scandal as coach of the Nigeria home based team during the CHAN tournament.

Reacting to the news, Amuneke whose last job with Nigeria ended with failure to qualify for the U20 Africa Cup of nations with arguably one of the most talented Nigeria U20 teams in recent times said he isn’t interested in assisting Rohr.

“I categorically deny nursing any ambition to work under any other coach either in Nigeria or elsewhere with my pedigree in the game. I did not apply to work as Rohr’s assistant and nobody has also approached me about it,” he was quoted as saying by Sportrevelation.com.ng.

“Why should I be an assistant coach to anyone with my pedigree in the game. With what I have done in the industry either as a player or coach, I should be going higher than working under another coach”.

Rohr Gets Assurances On Lookman And Ejaria Availability For Super Eagles As FIFA Switch Nears Completion

Lookman has impressed at Fulham where he is on loan from German side RB Leipzig and with the winger already in the process of completing his switch of allegiance to Nigeria he is in line for a call up to the Nigerian team.

Already the switch which has taken around a year is now one signature away from completion with which will likely be done in December ahead of the start of international football in March.

The same situation has kept Ejaria out of the team but his case which was complicated by passport issues is also near completion and could be done same time with that of Lookman.

“ It’s almost done. Last time we checked just one signature left to sign it off. So unless they are not called up by the coach they should play next year for the Super Eagles. I can tell you both players are excited”, a member of the management team of one of the players told Owngoalnigeria.com.

“ Coach Gernot Rohr believe they will add more options to the attack of the team and the NFF have been very supportive. We hope it ends soon for the good of all even Lookman is eager same as Ejaria”.

Former Chelsea defender Celestine Babayaro says FC Porto Nigerian defender Zaidu Sanusi will no doubt make his mark with the senior national team of Nigeria.

Sanusi has played in three of the four last games of the senior national team of Nigeria and only yesterday he scored his first goal in the UEFA Champions League.

Babayaro who was for years the first choice left back of the senior national team of Nigeria said he has seen some traits in the defender which reminds him of when he use to play.

“ He can cross the ball very well and he is also good in duels. He is a bit like me in the way he marks, I like him and I believe he can even be better than me if he continues to work hard”, Babayaro told Owngoalnigeria.com.

“ The way he loves to attack reminds me of me in my playing days and he can be a mainstay in the team if he continue to work hard and maybe we can now say we have found my replacement. He still has a long way to go though”.

Ekong Is Super Eagles Weak Link – Sierra Leone Coach Reveals

0

Coach of the national team of Sierra Leone says his team targeted Watford defender William Troost Ekong during their back to back AFCON qualifiers games against Nigeria.

John Kiester while analyzing his team’s impressive results against Nigeria which includes coming from a goal down to draw 4-4 in the first tie in Nigeria said they picked on the weak spot in the Nigerian team during the break.

Sierra Leone spectacularly clawed their way back to draw 4-4 with Nigeria from a position which looks like a likely massacre after just 31 minutes. “ It’s probably the greatest comeback in our football history”, the coach said.

“ Some will say it happened by accident but that’s not the truth. We were better technically and tactically. During the break with scores at 1-4, our plan was to pile pressure on Ekong and it happened. So it’s our strategy that worked out”.

Speaking on the reverse tie which ended 0-0, the coach credited the Nigerian players for playing with their hearts on their sleeves but said his team were unlucky not to win.

“ The Nigerian team played a lot different in Freetown. They were very very determined but that said we had chances that should have swing the game in our favour. We were unlucky not to have won”.

Super Eagles Midfielder Joe Aribo Admits Difficulties In Playing On African Pitches

0

Rangers of Scotland midfielder Joe Aribo has attributed his not too impressive display for Nigeria in the AFCON 2021 qualifiers to the nature of the pitches in Africa.

The 24 years old started his international career with Nigeria by scoring in his first two games against Ukraine and Brazil respectively but since then the goals have dried up.

Aribo has so far failed to score in any of the four games the team has played in the AFCON qualifiers with his performance in the back to back games against Sierra Leone his worst so far in a Nigerian shirt.

Explaining the reason behind his poor showing Aribo told close friends and associates that the quality of the pitches makes it hard for him to properly assert himself in games.

The first two games where he excelled for Nigeria were played abroad with better pitches hence his impressive performance. The weather in Africa is also another factor.

Prior to the game against Sierra Leone in Benin, Aribo complained about the harsh weather to his teammates. Kevin Akpoguma also shares same sentiments.

It’s Cash And Carry – Bribery Allegations Rocks Nigeria U17 Screening Exercise As NFF Board Members Clash Over Players

0

A mini crisis has engulfed the U17 team of Nigeria who are presently undergoing screening in preparation for the regional WAFU B championship which will take place in Benin Republic.

The tournament will run from the 5th to 20th of January 2021 and it will serve as qualifiers for the Africa U20 Cup of Nations which will take place in Morocco.

Ahead of the tournament, the Nigerian team have resumed training in Abuja with the players selected into two batches. The first set to train daily are the ones scouted by the coaches of the team during their scouting mission across Nigeria.

Another set of about a hundred player are usually allowed to train after the main team who are in camp with the coaches keen on any prospect from their mix.

Owngoalnigeria.com witnessed four different training sessions of the team and after speaking with sources who have been there from the start of training, we gathered a lot particularly the shady practices of a few.

Already two senior board members of the NFF are at loggerheads over the selection process as one is unhappy that most of the players he recommended have been dropped with the support of the other.

Furthermore, NFF are finding it hard to control the head coach of the team as he was suggested to them by an authority higher than them. “ We have complained to the NFF but they can’t do anything about the coach. He came from a man at the top”, a source told Owngoalnigeria.

“ There is an agent who acts as the go between in all these and many people here call him to help their players get a chance to train. Some who have money or connection use two board members of the NFF who are into players transfers and deals.

“ I know of a boy who was picked yesterday but his agent had to tip someone to let him in to train. We that don’t have anybody can’t do anything and the camp will close this weekend. It’s really sad”, he concluded.
