Exclusive- Rohr Rejects Amuneke, Insist On Salisu Yusuf As His First Assistant

0

Coach is the senior national team of Nigeria Gernot Rohr has told the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) his preferred choice as first assistant.

The position has been vacant since the expiration of the contract of Salisu Yusuf who was indicted in a cash for spot scandal while on national team assignment with the B team of Nigeria.

Rohr in a meeting with the NFF after the last round of international games told the football house that he wants the Enugu Rangers coach backed in his position with his suspension now over.

“ The man has made it clear that it’s Salisu Yusuf that he wants. No other name interest him. It’s Salisu or he keeps his crew the way it is at the moment. Emmanuel Amuneke has been mentioned to him but he want Salisu back”, a source told Owngoalnigeria.com.

“ Some of the best results the team has under Rohr was with Salisu as assistant. He trust his judgment when it comes to reading games, formations and also decision on players.

“ Rohr won’t mind to have Imama Amapakabo back because just like Salisu they are people that he trust and can vouch for their loyalty. Imama can’t return for obvious reason but Salisu is a huge possibility”, he concluded.

Tobias Lawal Makes U-Turn On Switch To Nigeria Despite Training With Super Eagles, Commits Future To Austria

0

LASK shot stopper Tobias Okiki Lawal has committed his international future to Austria just two months after training with the senior national team of Nigeria.

Lawal was part of the team that trained ahead of the friendly game against Algeria and Tunisia respectively but didn’t get to play in the games owing to administrative issues.

He however made an impression on Coach of the Nigerian team Gernot Rohr who was quick to point out that the young shot stopper will no doubt be a part of his team if his nationality issue is sorted.

Sorting it out means he will renounced his Austrian citizenship as the country does not allow dual nationality unless with special permission.

It appears Lawal has decided to stick with the Austrian team as he was part of their U21 team during the last international break but didn’t get to play in their 4-0 win over Andorra.

As a matter of fact he wasn’t even named on the bench for the game but from all indication he is willing to stick with Austria as it is highly unlikely that he will be offered a waiver to own another passport.

What Chidera Ejuke Must Do If He Wants To Be A Regular For Club And Country – CSKA Moscow Coach explains

0

Coach of CSKA Moscow Viktor Goncharenko has backed Chidera Ejuke to be a top player for club and country if he works on certain aspects of his game.

The coach who was instrumental in the signing of Ejuke from Dutch side Heerenveen hasn’t been too pleased with the impact of the Nigerian so far owing to his slow start to the season.

In the last three games, the coach has played the Nigerian from the bench but he is optimistic that he will come good with some little adjustments to his game.

Speaking on the back drop of their 1-1 draw with Sochi , he said Ejuke’s potential is clear for all to see but he need to apply himself properly in the opposition half if he want to be a top player for club and country.

“ The talent is there and you can see in the way he dribbles but there are decisions that are more important than dribbling. He has to be effective when in the opponent’s half. We are working on that”, the coach said.

“ He ( Ejuke) recently returned from playing for Nigeria and it’s part of the step that will make him a better player if he improves on that area of his game. It’s possible”.

Tomori Might Never Play For England Again , He Made A Mistake Turning Down Nigeria – Ex England International

0

Former England international John Fashanu says Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori might never get to play for England again.

Tomori snubbed the chance to represent Nigeria in favour of England but since his debut on the 17th of November 2019 against Kosovo. He hasn’t gotten another chance to represent the Three Lions.

Also his club career hasn’t been the best as well as he has struggled for game time falling down the pecking order to fourth choice at Chelsea following the arrival of Thiago Silva.

Speaking on the 22 year old, Fashanu said it’s a move that could see him lose out on the experience of playing international football because he might never play for England again.

“ When he played for England he was on the rise at Chelsea but he has since dropped down the ladder. It could cost him his international career because England have others ahead of him. He might never play for England again”.

Sunday Dare Want Some Players Dropped From Super Eagles, Threatens To Dissolve Team Set Up If NFF Insist On Rohr

0

The Minister for Youth and Sports in Nigeria says he will soon reconstitute the set up of the senior national team of Nigeria as his feud with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) deepens over the future of coach Gernot Rohr.

Dare want the Franco German coach of the team to be sacked but the NFF through it president Amaju Pinnick openly backed the coach insisting he has done well.

The minister is still reeling over the 4-4 draw against Sierra Leone after the team took a 4-0 lead. Dare is also unhappy that they fail to beat Sierra Leone in Freetown in the reverse tie.

In defence of Rohr, the NFF through Pinnick backed the coach insisting that he has done well in the years he has been in charge of the team starting from 2016.

That appears to have angered the minister who in a press statement threatened to dissolve the team and also hint at dropping some players from the team.

“We believe that when we hire a technical adviser; when we put our fate in the hands of some people, we expect some returns. If you hire a manager for your company and you don’t get the results you expect, you have the right to review your operation and take very critical decisions.
“My point is that we are going to sit back, review what has happened…we will review the entire team and whether the players are qualified or not to play for the team. Whether they are ready for this level of competition. We will also look at the technical adviser and also the entire people involved in football administration and the Super Eagles.
“You see when you fail to do the necessary checks, then you run the risk of repeating the same mistakes, failures and disappointments.”

Speaking further he played down any talks of interference from his part which could potentially earn a reprimand from FIFA insisting that it’s his duty as sports minister to oversee the affairs of the team carrying the image of the country.
“The Super Eagles represent Nigeria, sing Nigeria’s national anthem and wear Nigerian jerseys. So, without Nigeria as a sovereign country they have nobody to represent.
“When we look at their operations to make them better, it is no interference. They represent 200 million Nigerians and not any association or any individual. They carry our hopes and aspirations and as minister of sports of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, it is my responsibility to ensure that the interest of Nigerians is protected.
“To ensure that we have a football administration that serves the purpose, the vision and hopes of our country… we will review the way football is run in this country. It is not an interference; it will be a collective activity to make our football better.”

Super Eagles’ Test of Character in March 2021

0

A 0-0 draw in Sierra Leone wasn’t enough to secure the spot at the Africa Cup of Nations for the Nigerian national team.

The Super Eagles missed a nice chance to beat Leone Stars in their back-to-back clashes and remove them from the most prominent football tournament on the continent. Right now, Nigeria has 8 points, one more than Benin in the second place, and five than third-placed Sierra Leone. Lesotho is sitting at the bottom of the table with two points after four rounds.

Gernot Rohr‘s boys will have the final two games of the qualifications in late March 2021, visiting Benin and hosting Lesotho. They would need to take two points from these events in order to be safe and seal one of the top two places in Group L. Now every team in this assembly has its calculations; therefore, the Super Eagles won’t have an easy task.

Benin is beside the Super Eagles, the best team in the group, and the second spot is speaking for itself at the moment. After losing to Nigeria in the opening round of the AFCON qualifiers, 2-1, they win two matches before dropping a point in Lesotho. A victory there would have sealed their ticket for the continental tournament, which means they have a big motive to beat Nigeria.

So far, in seven H2H games, the Super Eagles won six times and lost just once. Rohr needs to find a way to overcome this difficulty and shut down all the doubters, otherwise, the game against Lesotho will be played in a pretty bad atmosphere. Those conditions can be very tricky, especially in must-win situations.

Lesotho is not a team Nigeria should be afraid of, especially after a 2-4 victory on the road. Osimhen with two and Chukwueze and Iwobi with one goal each solved that match in Super Eagles’ favor. However, many forget that the hosts scored first back then.

As said before, what is problematic here is the loss against Benin. Rohr is having many problems to handle certain situations, which is why big pressure before the game might create conditions for sensations. One small thing is enough for the avalanche to start, and after that, there is no way back.

The 2021 ACON is of great importance for Nigerian football. In 2013 the Super Eagles won the tournament, but they wouldn’t participate at all over the next two cycles. In the meantime, Nigeria bounced back, winning third place in the 2019 edition, and also participating in the 2018 World Cup, showing a vast talent on both ocassions. However, those drought years were extremely frustrating for all the fans back home and worldwide, which is why this team now needs to secure its spot in Cameroon at all costs.

Rohr’s unit has excellent players, and once looking at their roster, they should be one of the favorites for winning the AFCON. However, the reality is somewhat different. Iheanacho, Iwobi, Etebo, Chukwuenze, and others need to break that mental barrier before fulfilling their true potential in the national team.

It is one more reason why they need to finish the qualifiers successfully.

Rohr – Okoye Shut His Critics Up With Performance In 0-0 Draw Against Sierra Leone

0

Coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Gernot Rohr says Maduka Okoye showed why he is presently the first choice of the team with his performance in the 0-0 draw against Sierra Leone in Freetown.

Okoye was attacked by some section of the media in Nigeria after the team threw away a 4-0 lead to draw 4-4 on Friday against same team in Benin City.

The Sparta Rotterdam shot stopper was however still handed the position of first choice by Rohr for the reverse tie and even though he has little to do, Rohr felt he did enough to shut his critics up.

“ We wanted to be solid in defence after what happened on Friday and I am specially happy for our goalkeeper who showed to everyone that he is a good goalkeeper.

“ We have a young team it was the shock the other day of Victor Osimhen everybody was afraid and today they want to fight for him”.

Super Eagles Seal AFCON 2020 Spot After 0-0 Draw Against Sierra Leone

0

The Super Eagles of Nigeria are through to the 2020 Africa Cup of Nations despite drawing 0-0 with Sierra Leone in Freetown in the reverse tie of the 4-4 draw played on Friday.

Nigeria seal their spot as the other group game between Lesotho and Benin Republic ended in a 0-0 draw handing Nigeria the chance to seal their passage with a draw.

Lesotho and Sierra Leone are effectively out of the race with Nigeria and Benin Republic progressing from the group as the best placed two teams in the group.

On a pitch that looks more like a grazing outlay than a football pitch the Super Eagles had the best of chances to seal a win but came unstuck therefore missing a chance to avenge the 4-4 draw last week Friday.

Sierra Leone clawed their way back from a 4-0 deficit to draw 4-4 with Nigeria which kept their chances of qualifying open until today after the result in Maseru and the 0-0 draw against Nigeria in Freetown.
