Serbian top division side FK Novi Pazar have jumped to the defence of their Nigerian midfielder Adetunji Rasaq Adeshina in the wake of the controversy over his real age, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.
Adetunji who has been a revelation for the 10th place Serbia side since his promotion from the U19 two dead ago was caught off guard in an interview, where he was asked about his age.
Signed form Nigerian side Real Sapphire, the midfielder who has played in 17 games this season was asked about his age and he replied that he was born on the 2nd of December in the year 2001 rather than his official age of being born on the 2nd of December 2004.
It led to suspicion and talks that he is an age fraud, a crime most players from not just Nigeria but Africa have been accused of for years, due to a poor birth registration policy in their various countries.
Novi Pazar wasted no time in jumping to his defence explaining that he made an error during the interview due to a communication gap, not helped by his poor command of English language.
“Regarding information that appeared in some media outlets regarding our football player Adetunji Rasaq Adeshina, FK Novi Pazar, after reviewing the controversial broadcast and talking to the player, concluded that our football player, due to the language barrier and insufficient knowledge of English, clumsily made a slip and mispronounced.
