Harsh Words- On Loan Chelsea Striker Jackson Snubbed Peace Talks With Ex Super Eagles Captain Mikel

0

Former captain of the senior national team of Nigeria John Obi Mikel has revealed that Nicholas Jackson snubbed his attempt to have a private conversation with him after criticising him early into last season, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Mikel didn’t hold back in his criticism of the Senegalese striker. “You need a striker who knows how to hit a ball in the back of the net and that’s what we don’t have,” Mikel said after Chelsea’s defeat to Manchester City on the opening weekend of last season.

“I know I talk so much about him and sometimes I sound like I disrespect him. I don’t disrespect him. I think at Chelsea Football Club we need a top striker who can get us a goal.”

Jackson replied with an X-rated comment on social media telling the former Chelsea to keep his name out of his mouth. “@mikeljonobi shut your mouth, don’t talk s***, we are killing ourselves for Africa,” Jackson said in a furious Instagram post.

In an interview with TalkSPORT, Mikel revealed that his attempt to have a private conversation with Jackson after his criticism was rejected by the forward who is now on loan to German side Bayern Munich.

“No, no. Listen, I wanted to have a private conversation, but he declined. But fair enough, he didn’t want to speak to me.

“There was nothing there. I just wanted to let him know, as a friend, as someone who played for the football club, just to have an honest conversation.”

Nigeria Manipulated FIFA To Deduct Our Points – Coach Of South Africa Laments Super Eagles Advantage

0

Head coach of the senior national team of South Africa Hugo Broos says the decision by world football governing body FIFA to deduct three points from his team for fielding an ineligible player was powered by Nigeria, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

South Africa were deducted three points, three goals for fielding Teboho Mokoena in their 2-0 win over Lesotho, who was supposed to be suspended for the game after picking up two bookings in previous games.

Broos explained that it was Nigeria who pushed the most to get their points deducted after it was flagged by the Nigerian media.

“Not Lesotho, not me and my staff, and not the player in question were aware of any wrongdoing. Neither was FIFA. The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has met three times since then, and there was never a problem. Until two weeks before this crucial two-legged World Cup qualifier. It’s not normal, is it?

“No doubt due to pressure from Nigeria, which was in a losing position and now has a chance again. If this costs us the World Cup, it will be truly heartbreaking. Those yellow cards were from a year and a half earlier, but it will never happen to us again – 10 men have been keeping track of the yellow cards ever since,” he told Belgium newspaper.

CAF Boost Super Eagles Hope Of Qualifying For World Cup 2026 With Decision On Withdrawal Of Eritrea

0

Africa football governing body CAF has cleared the air on what will happen in the Africa series in the world cup qualifiers following the withdrawal of Eritrea from the series, leaving their group one team short unlike other groups, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

In a circular dated March 14, 2025, and signed by CAF’s Director of Tournaments and Events, Samson Adamu, the continental body detailed revised procedures to ensure fairness in determining the four best runners-up across all groups after Eritrea’s exit reduced the number of teams in one of the qualifying pools.

CAF stated that, in the event of any withdrawal or disqualification that leaves a group with fewer than five teams, results against the bottom-ranked or withdrawn teams will not be considered when comparing second-placed teams across all groups.

The adjustment aligns with Article 11.5 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 preliminary competition regulations and ensures uniformity in selecting the four best runners-up who will contest a centralized continental playoff for a potential World Cup slot via the intercontinental play-off.

It means the Super Eagles of Nigeria who took just four points from Zimbabwe, the team at the bottom of their group unlike other second placed teams who took maximum six points from the basement team in their group.

However for this to work , the team need to win their remaining two games in the series against Lesotho and Benin Republic respectively before taking advantage of the recent adjustment.

I Don’t Want Chelle’s Job – Eguavoen Denies Interest In Super Eagles Coaching Job

0

Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation, Coach Augustine Eguavoen has expressed deep distaste over reports in sections of the media on Wednesday that he was being tipped, alongside Coach Ladan Bosso, to take over the job of coaching the Super Eagles for the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations, should Coach Eric Chelle fail to qualify the team for next year’s FIFA World Cup finals.

“I feel very hurt by these baseless rumours because I really have no idea where they are coming from. I have a very good working relationship with Coach Eric Chelle, and I have absolutely no interest in taking over the squad. I am praying for him to succeed.

“This was how the same speculators created schism and disaffection between myself and Gernot Rohr and José Peseiro, when these gentlemen coached the Super Eagles, at different periods. It is uncalled-for. We all need to work together to see the Super Eagles qualify for the World Cup and win the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations championship in Morocco.”

Super Eagles Training Report – Simon Shines, Lookman Scores Wonder Goal, Osimhen Thrills Chelle

0

The Super Eagles of Nigeria had their first major training session yesterday ahead of tomorrow’s world cup qualifiers game against Lesotho, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

A total of 20 players took part in the session which was supervised by head coach Eric Chelle and his assistants. It lasted for around one hour, thirty minutes.

Two players missed the training namely Russia based Olakunle Olusegun, who isn’t expected to make the trip for the game due to entry visa issues, and Alhassan Yusuf who plays in the United States of America who is expected later today.

Chelle was clear from his instructions before the start of the training on the need to play on the front foot from the first minute. He went ahead to demonstrate that in the manner which he conducted the session.

Top striker Victor Osimhen displayed remarkable finishing abilities with the way he dispatched his efforts during the drills. His sharpness was evident from the start to the end of the session.

Team’s star winger Moses Simon also showed the form that has seen him rack up four goals contribution in seven games consisting of two goals and two assists. He was simply unplayable.

Ademola Lookman also proved his return to full fitness with a wonder goal which left goalkeeper Adebayo Adeleye rooted to the spot.

Five Likely Changes To Super Eagles Starting XI For Lesotho Game

0

Head coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Eric Chelle will make five changes to the Super Eagles team that started the last game against South Africa in the world cup qualifiers, OwnGoalNigeria.com can exclusively reveal.

Nigeria drew 1-1 against South Africa further compounding their chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. Their hope now rest on results elsewhere going their way in the final two games of the series.

They also need to win their own games, starting from tomorrow’s game against Lesotho and Chelle is leaving no stone unturned with the hope that they will have the points necessary to take advantage of any slip from the top two.

Chelle will set out the team in the best way possible with five changes to the team that drew against South Africa. Top of it is team captain William Troost-Ekong dropping to the bench for the returning Semi Ajayi.

In the absence of Ola Aina, Benjamin Fredrick slots in at right back with Zaidu Sanusi favourite to start at left back following the deployment of Calvin Bassey to his original starting role as a centre back.

Fisayo Dele-Bashiru is unavailable through injury and his spot will go to fellow top striker Tolu Arokodare, while Cyriel Dessers who is also through injury will be replaced by Victor Osimhen in the starting lineup.

NFF, NSC Reacts To Eguavoen Taking Over As New Super Eagles Coach After World Cup Qualifiers

0

Top officials of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have come out to debunk reports that the technical director of the football house Austine Eguavoen has been placed on standby as replacement for head coach Eric Chelle, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Report says Eguavoen will likely be in charge of the team for the upcoming friendly games in November, if the team fails to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, which ends next week with Nigeria third and their group and hoping for results elsewhere to go their way in order to qualify.

Chelle who took over the team will reportedly lose his job with Eguavoen lined up as his replacement alongside former Nigeria U20 coach Ladan Bosso, who is currently in charge of Nigeria Premier Football League side Barau FC.

However officials of the NFF say the report is just a figment of the imagination of the writer and platform, because no decision has been reached yet on the future of Chelle.

Another official said there is every chance that Chelle will lead the team to the AFCON from where a decision will be taken on his future. He said it will be unfair to judge the Malian with the world cup qualifiers considering where he met them.

Meanwhile sources at the National Sports Commission (NSC) also said they have not been informed about the decision on Chelle, and the NFF can’t fire him without their approval because they have been responsible for his salary.

An Early Look Ahead to the 2026 World Cup

0

It might still feel some way off, but the excitement surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup is already building. After the drama and surprises of Qatar 2022, football fans across the globe are turning their attention to what promises to be one of the most ambitious tournaments in history. With new venues, new formats, and a fresh generation of stars emerging, the 2026 World Cup is shaping up to be a truly global spectacle.

A World Cup on a New Scale

For the first time ever, the World Cup will be hosted across three nations: the United States, Canada, and Mexico. It’s a bold move from FIFA, designed to reflect the global reach of the modern game and to make use of world-class infrastructure across North America.

This will also be the biggest World Cup yet, expanding from 32 to 48 teams. The tournament will feature 16 groups of three, with two teams from each group progressing to a new round of 32. The idea is to give more nations a chance to experience football’s grandest stage—particularly those from Africa, Asia, and North America who’ve often missed out.

Of course, more teams means more matches, 104 in total, compared to 64 in 2022, spanning a vast geographical area. From the bright lights of Los Angeles to the football-mad streets of Mexico City and the modern arenas of Toronto and Vancouver, the 2026 World Cup will be a truly continental event.

The Contenders: Familiar Faces and Fresh Ambitions

It’s never too early to start speculating about who might lift the trophy. Unsurprisingly, the usual suspects are already looking strong. France, the powerhouse of modern international football, will once again be among the favourites in the football betting. With Kylian Mbappé entering what should be the peak years of his career, Les Bleus will expect nothing less than another deep run.

Argentina, the reigning champions, face the difficult task of defending their title. Yet, the Albiceleste have a wealth of young talent waiting in the wings, players like Julián Álvarez and Enzo Fernández will be central to their hopes of staying among the elite.

England, meanwhile, remain a fascinating prospect. The heartbreak of recent tournaments still lingers, but there’s no denying that Thomas Tuchel will have an immensely talented squad to work with. Jude Bellingham’s rise to stardom, combined with the continued maturity of players like Bukayo Saka and Phil Foden, could see England arrive in North America as genuine contenders once again.

Elsewhere, Brazil will be eager to reclaim their position at the top of world football. Despite falling short in Qatar, the Seleção remain stacked with talent, and their next generation looks every bit as exciting as those who came before. A mix of flair, athleticism, and tactical sophistication could make them a real force once more.

And then there are the dark horses, teams like Portugal, the Netherlands, and perhaps even the United States, who will enjoy home advantage and are building a promising young core.

A New Era of Football Storytelling

The 2026 World Cup will also be about much more than football. It’s a tournament designed to showcase innovation—on and off the pitch. With matches spread across three nations, the logistics alone will be fascinating. Expect state-of-the-art stadiums, sustainable event planning, and a focus on digital fan engagement like never before.

FIFA is betting heavily on North America’s ability to host a festival of football that appeals to both hardcore fans and casual viewers. The region’s growing interest in the sport—fueled by the success of Major League Soccer and a new generation of fans—means the atmosphere should be electric. For Canada, in particular, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to strengthen football’s foundations and inspire a new wave of talent.

Players to Watch

By 2026, we can expect to see a mix of familiar superstars and new faces taking centre stage. Players like Mbappé, Bellingham, and Vinícius Júnior could define the tournament, but it’s often the unexpected names who steal the spotlight.

Young talents currently making their mark in club football, Germany’s Jamal Musiala, or Italy’s Destiny Udogie, may well become household names by the time the first whistle blows. The next World Cup has all the ingredients for a generational shift, where the old guard passes the torch to football’s new elite.

Challenges Ahead

Of course, not everything will be straightforward. The expanded format brings its share of challenges. Critics argue that adding more teams could dilute the overall quality of the competition or make the group stage less compelling. There’s also the issue of travel, with teams potentially covering thousands of miles between matches, something that could affect preparation and performance.

Then there’s the scheduling question. With so many games to fit in, player fatigue will be a major concern, especially given the increasingly demanding club calendar. Managing workloads and maintaining squad depth will be crucial for any side hoping to go the distance.

The Road to 2026

Qualifying campaigns are already underway in several regions, with underdogs and heavyweights alike vying for their place. For some nations, simply reaching the World Cup will be a historic achievement; for others, it’s all about redemption.

As the countdown continues, the anticipation will only grow. The 2026 World Cup promises to blend the grandeur of the tournament’s past with the innovation and ambition of the modern game. It’s set to be football’s biggest stage yet—expansive, unpredictable, and utterly unmissable.
