I Can’t Face Super Eagles Unprepared In AFCON Qualifiers- Coach Of Libya Explains Why He Quit

0

The immediate past head coach of the senior national team of Libya Milutin Sredojevic popularly known as Micho has explained why he left his role as coach of the senior national team of Nigeria after the last round of games in the AFCON qualifiers, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Libya started their campaign in the series with a 1-1 draw at home to Rwanda before losing 1-2 away to Benin Republic. Micho it was reported was fired after the game but the coach says that isn’t the true picture behind his exit from the team.

In an exclusive interview with Babafemi Raji on the TOPMOST SPORTS SHOW on LASGIDI 90.1FM. The coach cleared the air on his exit stating clearly that his contract will run out at the end of this month and he isn’t open to renewing it, hence his exit.

“First of all I need to tell that last year in October,  I signed a one year contract and it was to take charge of the national team that played 32 matches and won only 8”, he told the fast rising radio show anchored by the former media officer of the Super Eagles.

“In rebuilding the team, In one year of my stay in Libya we played 16 matches winning 9. So in one year I won more matches than Libya did in 4 years.  I lost only two matches however I shall be offered in July extension of the contract, but it will be conditioned to the league and calendar being set in order for the team to be ready”.

He added that failure for the league to start as expected and with the back to back games coming up against Nigeria in October, he decided to walk away from his role and not like he was sacked as widely reported.

“We are the only team in Africa that has gone in preparations in the matches for the qualifiers and without being fit and ready.  Even all our clubs they have gone out of the African club tournament. So after playing first two matches with unprepared team, League was supposed to start and due to the fact that my contract is expiring, I was refusing to extend the contract because of the league not starting and i cannot face Nigeria unprepared when you play equal matches in competitive way”.

Micho maintained that he still remains the only coach to have completed his tenure as coach of Libya in their history, which in his words is a very difficult team to manage owing to the fact that the country is segmented into two divisions in governance, with one faction loyal to the West while the other pledge its allegiance to Russia leaving him with a huge responsibility of bringing unity to the team.

Arsenal legend Ian Wright says Atalanta won’t be the final destination of Nigeria international striker Ademola Lookman as he get set for tonight’s showdown against Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Lookman was the subject of an offer from PSG in the summer but the asking price of the Italian side made the move impossible. The hattrick hero in the Europa League 3-0 final win over Bayer Leverkusen has really grown in leaps and bounds since his move to Italy two years ago.

He is presently the only African player who made the final 30 man shortlist for the Ballon d’or. A nomination made possible not just for his hattrick in the final of the Europa League, but also his performance at the AFCON where Nigeria went all the way to the final before losing 1-2 to the host Cote d’Ivoire.

At the tournament, Lookman was key to the progress of the Nigerian team scoring three goals including a brace in the round of 16 win over Cameroon, and the lone goal in the quarter final 1-0 win over Angola.

Looking back at his rise, Lookman who represented England at various youth levels, before switching allegiance to Nigeria was praised by Wright who says the 26 year old is on a journey which doesn’t look like stopping at Atalanta.

“I’m pleased for him. His journey, from Charlton to now, shows his growth. I don’t think Atalanta is his final destination, as much as it’s been a great fit for him. It wouldn’t surprise me if a big move happens soon,” Wright said during his preview of today’s game.

I Didn’t Ask To Be Left Out Of Super Eagles Squad – Out Of Favour Nigeria International Explains

The interim coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Austine Eguavoen is set to send out provisional letter of invitations to players for the back to back AFCON 2025 qualifiers games against Libya in October, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Eguavoen will continue in his role as interim coach of the team after leading them to a 3-0 win over Benin Republic and a 0-0 draw against Rwanda, which see them go top of their group after two rounds of games.

One player who hasn’t been involved since the AFCON in February is 28 year old Southampton midfielder Joe Aribo. He wasn’t listed in all of their four games since playing a role in the team that finished second at the AFCON.

Now back in the English Premier League, Aribo’s exclusion raised eyebrows with some suggestions that he probably asked to be left out of the team owing to the bit part role he played at the AFCON.

” At no point did he tell anyone that he wants to be left out of the team. He is available but he can’t call himself unless the coaches do . I really don’t know where the entire story started from but it’s not true”, a close associate of the former Charlton midfielder revealed.

” Aribo is very ready to represent the Super Eagles whenever he is called up. Retirement from international football is not among his options in the nearest future”, he concluded.

New Super Eagles Coach: Ex Super Eagles Captain Details Why Eguavoen Is The Best Choice For The Role

0

Former captain of the senior national team of Nigeria Joseph Yobo has explained why the present interim coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Austine Eguavoen suits the team better , OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Eguavoen led the Super Eagles in their AFCON qualifiers games in September leading them to a 3-0 win over Benin Republic in Uyo and a 0-0 draw against Rwanda in Kigali.

His appointment which is for two games was made possible due to the breakdown in talks over wages with German coach Bruno Labbadia, who was announced as the substantive coach of the team by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

Looking at Eguavoen’s credentials to head the team , Yobo who played under the coach as a player, and was also his assistants two years ago when the team failed to make it the world cup shortly after crashing out of the round of 16 at the AFCON made a case for his former supremo.

“From my experience he has never been a defensive minded coach even in my time as a captain under him, he always wants you to build from the back. We were an attacking side under him starting from the back especially when playing at home. Nigeria’s DNA is an attacking footballing one; he also has that philosophy from his playing days”, he said in an interview with the print edition of the Guardian.

“As his assistant at the AFCON in Cameroon, I thought we played the best I have seen us play but it’s quite unfortunate we got that red card in the second half after we made a substitution that was meant to change the game. The pattern of play was defined even though some people forget this sometimes. Performance wise, that was one of the best I have seen the Eagles, both individually and collectively.

“The Cerezo I know is more like an attacking- minded coach who loves his team to play football. We missed some key players like (Victor) Osimhen in that tournament (AFCON 2021) and we had a few debutants at the tournament but that philosophy was there which is being replicated in the team currently.

” The current team is better reinforced, they’re stronger, have grown is stature and can now be held accountable for whatever they do. They understand the game more and are more experienced so I’m not surprised they are playing better at the moment”.

Eguavoen Lacks Grace To Be Super Eagles Coach – Ex Super Eagles Star Defender Tells NFF

0

Former Nigeria international defender Taribo West says the interim coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Austine Eguavoen lacks the grace required to succeed as the coach of the senior national team of Nigeria on a permanent deal, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Eguavoen led the Super Eagles in their AFCON qualifiers games in September leading them to a 3-0 win over Benin Republic in Uyo and a 0-0 draw against Rwanda in Kigali.

His assignment was for the two games, but after the performance of the team in the qualifiers there are calls for the coach who is in his fourth stint as coach to be made the permanent coach of the team.

Speaking on Brila FM’s ‘No Holds Barred with Ifeanyi Udeze’, Taribo, founder of the Shelter in The Storm Miracle Ministry, said, “Anytime Eguavoen leads the team, he brings a certain touch, taking the team back to those glorious days.

“In major tournaments, where you expect them to cross the line, something always happens. What Eguavoen is lacking is only grace.”

While West acknowledged that Eguavoen’s tactical approach often brings out the best in the players, he stressed that results haven’t consistently followed.

“The team will play well, but the results won’t favour them,” said West.

He added, “I don’t see why we go for foreign coaches when we can invest more in our local coaches.”
