The coach is the Bafana Bafana of South Africa Hugo Broos has urged the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to go hard on a decision with Zimbabwe in the world cup qualifiers race.

In the wake of the Warriors 1-1 draw against the Super Eagles of Nigeria at their adopted ground in Rwanda, the coach said teams like Zimbabwe who can’t play their home games in their country, due to poor infrastructure should not to be allowed to play in CAF games.

Zimbabwe is one among the 17 national teams, who will be playing their home games away from their country after CAF deemed their facility as not suitable enough to host games in the World Cup qualifiers.

Broos is of the opinion that it has taken the shine off the beauty and the real essence of why games are played at home.

“This one thing I don’t understand in African football is that home games are not home games,” said Broos.

“I think Zimbabwe will play their home games in South Africa, so we have a little advantage for that game.”

“So, what I saw in the past, for example, Liberia played their home game in Morocco, I’m very sorry but this is not correct. I think CAF must do something about this”, he opined.

Asked what he thinks is the best solution, he called for national teams with such cases to be given a time frame to make their stadiums ready to host games at home, and if they failed to do within the stipulated time they should be banned.

“I know it is not easy for those countries to have appropriate stadiums because it is something about money, but you can easily say, ‘in five years, if you don’t have a stadium, then you don’t play CAF games anymore, you don’t play AFCON qualifiers and that of the World Cup,” Broos said.

“But if you say nothing and those things happen, then the competition is not 100% correct anymore. It is not up to us, but it is the guys up there who have decided this and I hope one day they will decide by putting a period to say, ‘Okay, if you have not decided on the stadium that you need to have, I’m very sorry, you had those three or four or five years, finished, no qualifiers anymore – no for World Cup or AFCON’. Maybe then, they will do something”, he said shortly before his team’s 0-2 loss to Rwanda yesterday.

As reactions continue to pour in following the Super Eagles poor start to the 2026 world cup qualifiers, a lot of questions have been centered around the goalkeeping department of the team.

He was called up for the games against Lesotho and Zimbabwe respectively but he didn’t turn up with Peseiro explaining that he has issues with his passport. A camp source differed and told  OwnGoalNigeria.com that it wasn’t the real issue that kept him out.

According to our source, Okoye who was subjected to online abuses and threats skipped the game in Nigeria as he is afraid that he could be attacked by angry fans, who are still seething over the goal he conceded at the Africa Cup of Nations in the 0-1 defeat to Tunisia at the round of 16.

We gathered he is still yet to come to terms with the level of hatred and condemnation he received in the wake of the defeat, so bad that he isn’t mentally prepare to visit Nigeria or play a game in front of the home fans anytime soon.

Peseiro hasn’t have the best of times as coach of the senior national team of Nigeria and with two draws in the first two games of the 2026 world cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Zimbabwe respectively. The pressure is on the NFF to replace the coach.

His short term deal will expire after the Africa Cup of Nations in February next year, but he is already looking at other opportunities which could see him leave his role with Nigeria before the tournament next year. Better still immediately after the tournament although there is an option of extending his contract if he takes the team to the final.

Egyptian side Zamalek confirmed talks with the Portuguese on taking over as their coach and it has pushed the NFF into making plans of their own in the event of his departure.

Three names have been pencilled down and it includes a present coach of an African side who has twice failed in his bid to be the coach of the Super Eagles. A Nigerian coach working abroad is also among the names shortlisted.

We gathered that all three coaches have been contacted already by the NFF, but a decision on appointing them will only be reached in the event that Peseiro quits his role as the football house can’t afford to pay the penalty that will come with his dismissal.

A former board member of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has opened up on the role celebrated Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho played in the appointment of his country man Jose Peseiro as the coach of the senior national team of Nigeria.

Peseiro has come under fire after Nigeria’s poor start to the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup with two draws in their first two games against Lesotho and Zimbabwe respectively. Both games ended in a 1-1 draw.

Since his appointment as coach of the Nigerian team he has lost 60% of the games he has handled as coach, prompting a lot of questions about the rationale behind his appointment in the first place.

He came third behind Philip Cocu and Ernesto Valverde when coaches were interviewed for the Super Eagles job over a year ago. How he got the nod to handle the team has now been revealed by a former football chief who was part of the decision makers at that time.

” When we interviewed coaches for the jobs, Peseiro didn’t do well like the duo of Cocu and Valverde. His use of english was horrible. Cocu fits our budget perfectly but the inclusion of Mourinho as one of his referees worked for Peseiro. Valverde was too expensive for us”, he told OwnGoalNigeria.com in an exclusive chat.

” We called Mourinho and spoke with him. The then NFF president Amaju Pinnick and former minister for Sports Sunday Dare were so excited with speaking with Mourinho and it clinched it for Peseiro”, he concluded.

Egyptian top division side Zamalek has confirmed their interest in hiring under fire coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Jose Peseiro as their new coach, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

As we reported reports have been circulating in the Egyptian media that the coach is in talks with the Portuguese coach, whose contract with the senior national team of Nigeria will terminate after the AFCON in February unless he gets to the final of the tournament.

The captain of the senior national team of Nigeria Ahmed Musa has taken a swipe at players living abroad playing for the team in the wake of the poor results the team is encountering at the moment, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Nigeria has two points from their first two games of the qualifiers for the 2026 world cup following a 1-1 draw at home against Lesotho and another 1-1 draw away to Zimbabwe in Rwanda.

The results have put the head coach of the team  under serious pressure with many people calling for him to be relieved of his role as coach of the team. Since taking over as coach the team has lost 60% of the games he has handled.

Essien speaking after the draw against Zimbabwe said their hands are tied when it comes to sacking the coach because they can’t afford to pay him off. He reminded Nigerians that the present board didn’t appoint the coach rather they inherited him from the Amaju Pinnick led board.

Peseiro’s deal was extended by the current board of the NFF but they slashed his earnings from $70,000 to $50,000 saying they can’t afford his previous salary. According to Essien they are even struggling to meet up with the $50,000 a month he is due, and the coach has only received three month salary since May 2022 when he took over as coach of the team.

” We have to respect Jose Peseiro’s contract. If we had the money to give him (pay him off), we are going to relieve him. We are not happy” he said in an interview conducted by Callistus Ebare of AIT.
