Neville Nwankwo – Little Known Nigerian Centre Back Making Waves In Dutch Top League

0

Not many are aware that about a certain 23 year old Nigerian who has so far made 14 appearances in the Dutch top division for Telstar, where he is on loan from Utrecht.

His name is Neville Ogidi Nwankwo who was playing amateur football in the Netherlands around this time last year, but has not shown any sign of struggling to fit in at the top level.

Tall, quick and also very neat and tidy in his tackles, he is also blessed with the ability to pick a pass from deep and also help his team to build from the back.

He is teammates with his elder brother Nigel Ogidi Nwankwo, but it’s his performances that has caught the eyes with his brother who is 27 making just four appearances this season.

Last weekend he made the official team of the week of the Dutch top division. A testament to how well he has acquitted himself to the demands of playing in the highest tier in the Netherlands.

His international future would have been a source of concern to Nigeria, because he was born in the Netherlands but sources say he has his heart and mind set on playing for Nigeria.

For now he is enjoying and thriving in a professional setup with a modest side, and will return to Utrecht next season where he is expected to be ready to play after gaining sufficient experience this season.

FIFA Stirs Confusion On Protest Against DR Congo Fielding Ineligible Players Against Nigeria

0

A high ranking member of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) says FIFA has caused confusion in the football house with the manner which they are handling the protest against DR Congo for fielding ineligible players in the world cup playoff win over Nigeria, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Nigeria are protesting that around seven members of the team of DR Congo who played in the game against Nigeria, that handed them the ticket to represent Africa at the intercontinental playoff are in breach of the requirements to be citizens of DR Congo.

For one to be a citizen of Congo, you must rescind your other nationality to get a passport, but the players in question are still holding bonafide citizens of other countries. A clear violation of the constitution of the country.

The protest is hinged on the manner which they got the passport that was submitted by FIFA to be cleared to play, while still holding passports of another country.

” I can’t tell what is going on and it’s the same for all of us in the board of the NFF at the moment. FIFA hasn’t officially charged DR Congo with any infraction. So it’s a whole lot of confusion down here”, he said.

He however said a ruling is expected next month before the playoff in March, confirming that the NFF will no doubt lodge an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) if they don’t get justice from FIFA.

” If we don’t get the justice that we expect, then CAS will be the next stop. That I can assure you”, he concluded.

UEFA Confirms Eligibility Of Two Players To Play For Super Eagles After Champions League Exploits

0

European football governing body UEFA has confirmed that the duo of George Ilenikhena of French side Monaco and Honest Ahanor of Italy were registered for the Champions League with Nigerian passport.

Last week the football body posted that Ilenikhena has smashed the record set by his fellow Nigerian Kanu Nwankwo in the tournament’s history by becoming the youngest African player to reach 15 appearances in the competition.

Ilenikhena achieved the milestone at the age of 19 years and 157 days following his 18-minute appearance for Monaco in their 6-1 defeat to Real Madrid on Tuesday.

“George Ilenikhena makes history. Youngest African player to reach 15 UCL games,” UEFA announced on Wednesday.

In a post about the nationality of players who have played in the group stages as the tournament comes to an end, UEFA used the international passport of the players to determine their country.

17 year old Atalanta defender Ahanor was classed as a Nigerian, and he has so far made five appearances in the tournament in what is his first season with the team.

However both players have so far shunned approaches to play for Nigeria, insisting on waiting to get the passport of the country where they are plying their trade at the moment.

Chelle List Requirements For New Players To Be Part Of Super Eagles, Confirms New Goalkeeper

0

Head coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Eric Chelle has started the process of improving the team after their third place finish at the recently concluded Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

The coach will remain as the coach of the team despite offers from elsewhere with promises of a better salary package. He has already started work on getting new players for the team.

Sources say the coach has already gotten a new goalkeeper in Wrexham’s goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo, who is expected to be a part of the team for the AFCON qualifiers when it begins in March.

Okonkwo has been granted clearance by FIFA to play for Nigeria, and the 24 year old who has made 26 appearances in the English Championship, will be the main challenger to Stanley Nwabali.

Chelle has also looked at other outfield players, with the main criteria to be a part of his team largely on the ability of the player to be aggressive, quick and also willing to cover up spaces without the ball.

So far he has compiled a list of players for extensive scouting, before picking the ones that will come into his team when they resume in March.

Safe Travel Tips for International Football Fans Visiting Nigeria

0

If you are flying into Nigeria to watch football, you are in for color, noise, and serious passion. Stadium days feel electric, and fans welcome visitors with curiosity and jokes.

Like any international trip, staying safe means staying aware, not staying scared. Nigeria is busy, social, and fast-moving, especially in big cities. A little preparation helps you enjoy football without stress.

This guide focuses on a few safety tips that foreigners should keep in mind as they land in Nigeria to enjoy some spectacular football.

Understand Local Areas and Matchday Movement

Nigeria’s cities change personalities depending on time and location. A street that feels calm in daylight can feel different at night.

Every year, hundreds of thousands of foreign tourists visit Nigeria; 2023 alone saw over a million international visitors. Many visit the country to enjoy its footballing heritage, and you might be one of them.

Before matchday, ask hotel staff about safe routes and busy areas. Locals know which roads flood with traffic or crowds. Plan how you will move before and after games. Matches often end late, and transport demand spikes fast. Stick to well-lit streets and places with people around. Avoid showing confusion in public.

If you look unsure, pause inside a shop or café. Stadium crowds are loud but usually friendly. Still, keep your phone secure, and your bag zipped. Confidence helps more than speed.

Use Ride-Hailing Apps With Extra Awareness

Ride-hailing apps are popular in Nigerian cities. In fact, the Nigerian ride-hailing market is anticipated to have generated a revenue of over $300 million in. Of course, no matter how popular it may be, when you’re getting into a random person’s car, you’d best be cautious.

Always confirm the driver’s name and car before entering. Sit in the back seat and keep your phone charged. Share your trip details with someone you trust. Trust your instincts if something feels off. You can always cancel a ride.

Busy matchdays can rush drivers, so speak up if you feel uncomfortable. Choose pickup spots with lighting and people around. Avoid giving out personal details during rides; remember that being polite does not mean oversharing.

Globally, ride-hailing platforms have faced serious scrutiny. Take the US-based Uber sexual assault lawsuits as an example. The Uber sexual assault lawsuit highlights concerns raised in Uber sexual assault cases.

As TorHoerman Law notes, the Uber lawsuit filings show why safety checks, trusted drivers, and strong security matter everywhere. Speaking with an Uber sexual assault lawyer often reveals patterns involving safety gaps. For travelers, this reinforces the use of in-app security tools, staying alert, and prioritizing safety and security choices.

Respect Local Culture and Matchday Etiquette

Football passion in Nigeria runs deep, and respect goes a long way. Wear team colors proudly, but avoid taunting rival fans. Friendly banter is fine, but know when to stop.

Learn simple greetings and use them often. Nigerians appreciate effort and warmth. Dress comfortably but modestly outside stadiums, especially in conservative areas. Ask before taking photos of people.

On matchdays, follow crowd flow instead of pushing against it. Security officers are present to help, not intimidate. Listen to instructions even when the crowd feels chaotic. Showing respect reduces tension fast. When locals see you enjoying the game respectfully, they often look out for you.

Protect Your Documents and Digital Identity

Petty crimes aren’t uncommon in Nigeria, especially around the holiday season. Hence, you need to keep your belongings safe, especially various important documents.

Your passport is your lifeline while traveling. Keep it in a hotel safe when possible and carry copies. A phone photo helps, but printed copies still matter.

Avoid pulling out your passport in public unless necessary. Use a money belt or an inner pocket for important documents. Digital safety matters too. Use secure networks and avoid public Wi-Fi for banking. Enable phone tracking and remote locking before arrival. Football trips involve photos and social sharing, but avoid posting your live location.

Small habits reduce risk without ruining fun. If something goes missing, report it quickly to your embassy. Nigerian officials are used to helping visitors with paperwork issues. Staying organized saves time and stress. When documents are secure, your focus stays on football, not forms or emergency calls.

Stay Healthy and Plan for Emergencies

Excitement can distract you from basic health habits. Drink bottled water and stay hydrated, especially in the heat. Eat at busy places where food turnover is high. Carry basic medication you might need. Know the nearest hospital to your accommodation. Save emergency numbers in your phone and on paper.

Travel insurance matters more than you think. It covers issues beyond football injuries. If you feel unwell, seek help early. Nigerian cities have quality private clinics. Do not wait things out hoping they pass. Planning for emergencies does not mean expecting them. It means you are free to enjoy the trip fully.

Fabrizio Romano Reveals Atletico Madrid “Thursday” Plan On January Signing Of Lookman

0

Spanish giants Atletico Madrid will push to sign Nigeria international striker Ademola Lookman in from Atalanta in the January transfer window according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Lookman has been linked with a move away from the team in the January transfer window, after a failed attempt in the summer to push a move by going on strike.

Reports say he has already made up his mind on an exit before the end of this month, and has already informed the club of his intention to consider other options now rather than the summer which the club prefers.

Speaking yesterday Romano said the forward has always been a target for the Spanish side, whose coach Diego Simeone admires and made attempt last summer to have him in his ranks.

“Ademola Lookman is a player Atlético Madrid have always admired. Currently, he is focused on the Champions League. We’ll see what happens from Thursday onwards”, he said.

Alessandro Marcandalli: Genoa Star Defender Waiting To Hear From Chelle On Super Eagles Spot

0

Genoa defender Alessandro Marcandalli hasn’t been contacted to play for Nigeria despite making it clear that he is open to the idea of switching from Italy, OwnGoalNigeria.com can exclusively reveal.

Last weekend Marcandalli who is primarily a centre back bagged two assists in a 3-2 win for Genoa in the Serie A, his 16th appearance in the Italian top division this season.

Last year he revealed that the option of playing for Nigeria is a topic of interest to him not minding the fact that he has played for Italy at U21 level. “I haven’t thought about it yet; I have time to make a decision. When the time comes, if there is a call-up, then I will choose,” he told Il Secolo XIX.

A source close to the 23 year old revealed in an exclusive chat with our reporter that there has been no contact, or whatsoever from Nigeria since he made that statement.

” I am not sure they are aware of him because no one has contacted his camp. I hold close ties with his agent and also friends. There is nothing yet from Nigeria at the moment, so hoping for an Italian call up is the only option at the moment, but it could change in the coming days. You never know”, he said.

Chelle Make Decision On Five Super Eagles Players After Poor AFCON Campaign

0

Head coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Eric Chelle will improve the depth of the team after their bronze medal finish at the recently concluded AFCON in Morocco, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

While Chelle will retain the bulk of the team when they resume for the AFCON qualifiers in March, he has however made a decision on some players after watching them at close quarters at the AFCON, and will likely not include them in his immediate plans.

Although there is still a chance that they return back to the squad in the future, especially if their club form become too hot to ensure, Chelle has however for the time being kept them aside for the second part of his project.

1. Zaidu Sanusi – Lost his spot to Bruno Onyemaechi and never got it back not even in the third place game. His future in the team is highly uncertain with Ola Aina who can play at left back also fit and available now.

2. Chidera Ejuke – Chelle had big hopes on him going to the tournament, but after his introduction against Tunisia in the 3-2 win where he failed to meet up of the defensive demand he didn’t get to play until a substitute role in the third place game. Not looking good for his future in the team.

3. Ebenezer Akinsamiro – He was supposed to push Alex Iwobi for the midfield role, so much that Chelle already tipped him as his joker. A poor performance against Egypt in a friendly game before the tournament didn’t help his cause and didn’t get a single minute at the AFCON. The idea is to allow him grow further before another invitation.

4. Chidozie Awaziem – A reliable backup since 2018, but it’s now looking like his time is almost up with Igho Ogbu now ahead of him as seen in the third place playoff against Egypt.

5. Usman Mohammed – Controversially included and that enough reason why he didn’t even make the match day squad even once. At 31 its clear that there is no way back for him.

Sexual Assault In Norway – Nigeria U20 Captain Daga Axed From Molde’s Winter Training Camp

0

The captain of the U20 team of Nigeria Daniel Daga has not been included in the squad of Norwegian side Molde for their winter camp, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Molde are currently at their winter camp in La Nucia, a suburb of Span with 27 players in preparation for the season but without Daga , who is facing charges of sexual assault.

Daga joined the team a year ago, and was handed indefinite suspension when the matter of sexual assault started. The club confirmed the issue with an official statement.

He is expected to face a court hearing at Nordmore and Romsdal District Court in March 2026 upon his return from Nigeria, where he is currently on holiday.

“This is a serious matter, and we take the charges very seriously. These types of cases are extremely demanding for everyone involved”, Molde chairman Odd Ivar Moen said.

Molde confirmed that they have been in touch with the lady who lodged the complainant and her legal representatives to acknowledge the emotional and personal burden associated with the case.

Legal aid lawyer Anette Western Torgersen, representing the complainant, declined to discuss details, stating only that the matter represents “a great burden for the victim.”

The legal team of the 18 year old Nigerian however strongly denied wrongdoing. His lawyer, Astrid Bolstad, said the midfielder acknowledges a sexual encounter occurred but insists it was consensual.

“My client does not plead guilty and believes he has done nothing illegal,” Bolstad said.

“There is no suspicion of violence or threats. He looks forward to having the case heard in court so he can clear his name.”
