Villarreal moved up to 3rd position in the Spanish LaLiga thanks to a 2-0 win over Real Valladolid earlier today with their Nigerian winger Samuel Chukwueze ending his eleven months goal drought.

The Nigeria Football Federation has confirmed Paul Onuachu as the replacement for injured Moses Simon in the Super Eagles squad for the back to back Africa Cup of Nations game against Sierra Leone.

Simon has been ruled out of the game after picking up a groin injury that will see him spend three to four weeks on the sideline.

In our reports , Onuachu was placed on alert Incase the injury suffered by Omeruo while in action for Leganes rules him out of the games which will be played on the 13th and 17th of November respectively.

“ You probably heard it wrongly. It’s Nwakali who is waiting on the injury to Omeruo before his spot will be decided. Onuachu was informed since yesterday of his call up. Nwakali can still make it if Omeruo isn’t passed fit”, a source revealed.

Former captain of Nigeria U17, U20 and U23 team Kelechi Nwakali has been picked by coach Gernot Rohr as replacement for the injured Moses Simon in the Super Eagles squad for AFCON 2021 qualifiers.

Nigeria will play Sierra Leone in back to back AFCON qualifiers on the 13th of November in Benin City before traveling to Freetown for the reverse tie four days later.

Simon who was named in the 24 man list went off 25 minutes into Nantes 0-3 loss to PSG with a groin injury that will likely keep him out for three weeks or more, effectively ruling him out of the games.

Nwakali who was on the standby list has been contacted by Rohr to take the spot of Simon boosting the numbers in midfield where Rohr called up few numbers.

Kenneth Omeruo is also feared out with what looks like an injury similar to that of Simon after leaving the pitch 48 minutes into their 1-0 loss over Mirandes in the Spanish second division.

West Brom defender Semi Ajayi will continue in his role in the midfield for Nigeria with Wilfred Ndidi still out injured for the AFCON 2021 qualifiers.

Ajayi played as the defensive midfielder for the recent friendly games against Algeria and Tunisia respectively. Rohr has pencilled him down for same role in the back to back games against Sierra Leone.

Nigeria need four points from the two games to book a place in next year Africa Cup of Nations and in his 24 man squad for the game the coach listed ten defenders.

Defending his decision the coach said Ajayi who was listed as a defender is in the squad as a midfielder with Ndidi still not available “ We don’t have ten defenders for the game. Ahead of Villarreal’s game against Real Valladolid later today in the La Liga Unai Emery has been accused of negatively impacting on the abilities of Samuel Chukwueze.

Emery took over as coach of Villarreal in the summer and so far his team hasn’t played as many expected with Chukwueze yet to hit the height that made him a sensation with the team.

Since his big money move to Napoli, Osimhen has scored just once in four games but Gattuso has backed the striker to get back among the goals very soon.

“ No he is not struggling but he has to score and very soon he will. He is playing for the team and that’s very important for the way we play”, he concluded.

German Nigerian defender Kevin Akpoguma won’t be at his best unless the coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Gernot Rohr plays him in his favorite position.

The Hoffenheim defender made his international bow for Nigeria during the last international break playing in both games against Algeria and Tunisia respectively.

In both games he was played at right back and according to Mark Rowland, the 25 year old won’t show his true worth unless he is played in a position where he will make use of his strengths.

“ He looked lost as a right back. Not anywhere close to his level. Akpoguma has excelled for Hoffenheim this season in a back five as part of the three central defenders”, he told Owngoalnigeria.com.

“ That’s his strength and he has played in almost every game for Hoffenheim in that position this season. He is a massive player but he will remain average for Nigeria unless the coach plays him in his position in central defence”.

Maduka Okoye will start in goal for the senior national team of Nigeria when they take in Sierra Leone in back to back AFCON 2021 qualifiers games next month.

Nigeria will take on Sierra Leone in Benin City on the 13th of November before traveling to Freetown for the reverse tie on the 17th of same month. Four points from the two games will seal Nigeria’s spot at the tournament.

Ahead of the game Gernot Rohr has called up 24 players including three goalkeepers in Maduka Okoye , Daniel Akpeyi and Sebastain Osigwe but Osigwe is feared out of the tie after testing positive for coronavirus.

One of the duo of Ikechukwu Ezenwa and Francis Uzoho will replace the shot stopper if it’s confirmed that he won’t be honoring his first call up to the senior national team of Nigeria due to the virus.

Already coach of the team have settled for Okoye to continue in goal after his impressive performance in the last three games he has played for Nigeria. He was particularly impressive against Algeria and Tunisia respectively during the last international break.

Rohr is set to stick with the 21 year old who also marked his first team debut for Sparta Rotterdam with a display that left many asking for him to continue in goal despite the fact that they lost the Cup tie to ADO Den Haag.

The idea to stick with Okoye informed the decision to leave out Uzoho , the anointed first choice but he could be set for a return following the situation of Osigwe as said above.

Even if Uzoho is drafted in from the standby list, Okoye will still keep goal in both games barring a last minute situation beyond the capacity of the technical crew.

The coach called up 24 players with seven others placed on standby for the back to back qualifiers game which Nigeria need four points from a possible six to seal progress to the tournament proper.

Goalkeepers –

Matthew Yakubu – The SKF Sered shot stopper is for now the only Nigerian goalkeeper who is a regular for a team in Europe. He holds the record of having kept goal In more games than any other Nigerian goalkeeper since the resumption of football.

Rohr spoke highly of the former U20 shot stopper and even talked about giving him a chance in one of their two friendly games but he backtracked on his words. Omitting him for Daniel Akpeyi shows the coach hasn’t quite move away from the old order and has little or no plans for the future.

Worst still he didn’t even consider him among the standby options as he went for the returning Francis Uzoho and Ikechukwu Ezenwa who hasn’t played a minute of competitive football in seven months.

Defenders –

The list which has ten defenders can’t be said to be perfect and it’s hard to fault the coach if any player is omitted. However the coach should have been brave enough to sacrifice one among the six central defenders in the squad.

Although Semi Ajayi is likely to play in midfield. It still leave him with five players in an area where four would have been the wisest number to go with.

Midfielders :

Kelechi Nwakali- He is yet to light it up in Spain with Huesca but he has what it takes to be a part of the squad now considering the level he is playing at the moment. Rohr knows too well about his abilities to open up defences with well weighted passes.

Placed on the stand by list. It’s clear to see that he is in the plans of Rohr but if he is not considered for a game like this against Ike of the minnows in Africa then when will his chance come.

Attackers –

Terem Moffi, Josh Maja – With the avalanche of options available to Rohr, the coach picked only one out and out striker in Victor Osimhen with Paul Onuachu on the standby list.

Ahmed Musa and Kelechi Iheanacho are expected to make up for the numbers in that department but many who have followed the progress of Nigerian players in Europe this season will make a case for the duo of Terem Moffi of Lorient and Josh Maja of Bordeaux.

Both players have no doubt proved that they can be alternative to Osimhen with their style of play which is in sharp contrast to that of the Napoli man.
