Exclusive Interview : Finidi Hoping To Become The Luis Aragones Of Super Eagles

0

Having completed a highly-talked-about African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Ivory Coast, Nigeria’s men’s national team, the Super Eagles, have found themselves in a transition period that could swing either side of a pendulum.

In the spotlight of this transition is Finidi George, head coach of Nigerian league champions Enyimba, and a key member of the Nigerian delegation that finished as runners-up at the 2023 AFCON tournament after losing 2-1 in the finals to hosts Ivory Coast.

Following the expiration of Jose Peseiro’s contract with the Super Eagles in March, and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) announcing that they were looking for a new man to take charge of the three-time African champions, George, who had served as an assistant under Peseiro, was tasked with managing the team on an interim basis.

“When I was told to take charge, it felt really good,” the former Ajax player told SportsBoom while preparing to engage the Super Eagles in training barely two days after leading them to defeat Ghana for the first time since 2006.

“I’m not new to the team, so it wouldn’t take me so long to adapt and try to do new things. I’ve been with the team for almost two years. I know all the players, their strengths, their weaknesses.

“I’m here to serve Nigeria, I’ve been called upon to do that and I will do it to my best capacity, the way I know how to do stuff. I will just take these 2 games and go back to my club. Whatever decision is taken after, so be it. I’m not under pressure to say ‘It must be me.”

Like La Roja, Like Super Eagles?

Considering the Super Eagles’ very-fluid-movement-and-exciting brand of football in their international friendly wins over Ghana, and Mali (a contrast to Nigeria’s rigid defensively-compact style employed at the AFCON), speculation already suggest that the Enyimba head coach might be the best option for a hire, for a cash-strapped Nigerian football governing body.

Already, George, who made it obvious that he is not trying to get ahead of himself, is dreaming of replicating the type of football he learnt from EURO 2008 winning coach Luis Aragones – while as a player at Real Betis and Mallorca – in the Super Eagles.

“I’ve worked with so many coaches,” he responded when asked about his coaching inspiration, “…from the late Luis Aragones to [Louis] van Gaal, Guus Hiddink, [Javier] Clemente, [Clemens] Westerhof.

Over the years, I’ve worked with these coaches, but I think it was the former Spanish coach, Aragones, that impacted me the most.

“Aragones’ way of managing players was fantastic because even those that were not playing were happy to be in the team. It is really difficult for a coach to achieve.

“Now, as a coach, I reflect and see it’s not an easy job, managing a team of 25+ players throughout a season without conflict, it’s fantastic,” George said with a light-hearted smile recollecting how he led Enyimba to their ninth NPFL title in just his second season in the league.

“Coming back to coach in the Nigerian League helped me, all credit to Enyimba. If I had been in Europe, that would be difficult.

“For now, my job is to finish the two games (against Ghana and Mali),” he added.

Finidi’s dream future

Speaking about legacies, George stated that if the NFF gave him the job after his ‘test period’, he would love to walk in the path of Stephen Keshi, the last manager to have had a trophy-laden tenure with the Super Eagles.

“I would like to emulate Keshi and win the AFCON. He won it as a player, and then as a coach which is fantastic. I would like to do the same. The first thing though, is to qualify first.”

While the main rounds of the next AFCON qualifiers might still be a while away from getting underway, the Super Eagles will be required back in action in June when they take on South Africa and Benin Republic in a continuation of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

It is uncertain though, what decisions – whether George continues managing the Super Eagles, or a new head coach gets hired – the NFF will take before then.

NFF Technical Committee Member – Finidi George Will Likely Remain As Super Eagles Permanent Coach

0

A member of the technical committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) says it’s looking very likely that present interim coach Finidi George will be the next permanent coach of the team, OwnGoalNigeria. com reports.

Nigeria is without a substantive coach following the departure of Jose Peseiro as coach upon the expiration of his contract after the Africa Cup of Nations, where the team finished as runners up losing 1-2 to the host Cote d’Ivoire.

It made the NFF to appoint Finidi George in temporary charge for the friendly games against Ghana and Mali. They made a winning start beating Ghana 2-1 and will take on Mali today.

There has been calls for an indigenous coach to be left in charge with the duo of Emmanuel Amunike and the current interim coach leading the pile, but according to former Nigeria international Victor Ikpeba who is a member of the technical committee of the NFF, the body responsible for making recommendation for a new coach Finidi has a good chance of staying in his role on a permanent basis.

While speaking on Monday Night Football anchored by Charles Anazodo, Ikepba while responding to a question on if the current coach of Enyimba has any chance of staying in his job beyond the game against Mali, he said it looks a lot likey.

“I am happy with what Finidi is doing with the Super Eagles. I am in the system and I know what he’s doing. Don’t forget that I am in the committee set up to do the right thing.

“From what I have seen from the players’ comments, it’s looking good for Finidi George.

“As I speak right now, I think it’s looking good for him. Mind you. I am not the decision-maker, I am one of the people who will advise the NFF. but it’s looking good for Finidi.”

NFF Technical Committee Member Drops Hint On How New Super Eagles Coach Will Be Appointed

0

A member of the region committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has dropped a huge hint on how the next coach of the Super Eagles will be decided, OwnGoaNigeria.com reports.

There has been calls for an indigenous coach to be left in charge with the duo of Emmanuel Amunike and the current interim coach leading the pile, but according to former Nigeria international Victor Ikpeba who is a member of the technical committee of the NFF, the body responsible for making recommendation for a new coach, they won’t be sway by sympathy.

“I personally think that; though I’m a member of the technical committee and I’m not here to dwell on what the members think on who is going to be made Super Eagles coach. I can tell you that it has nothing to do with colour, who is best qualified will be given the job”, he was quoted as saying by Totorinews.com.

“Sentiment was on ground two years ago when the job was given to Eguaveon, with due respect I think he did his best, unfortunately Nigeria did not qualify for the World Cup.

“You can’t really blame him because he was not the architect of the team. So for me personally and the other members I think decision will be made and it will be very objective for the desire and the inspiration of football followers in this great country,” he further said.

“We did things in a rush when Gernot Rohr was sacked and we all remembered what happened after. We failed to qualify for the World Cup. We saw how ; may his soul rest in peace; Amodu Shuaibu qualified the Super Eagles for the World Cup. Remember that in that era many people did not believe in black coaches, so if there is a new wave towards that now, it is good, but Nigeria is too big enough to talk about colour.

“Football is beyond colour. We need to educate our fans. It is very important and fundamental, most of us that made a name through football the Europeans gave us that platform, that opportunity to become who we are today, it’s the truth so we should be careful when we talk about colour , there’s no colour in football.

“Football is just a unique sport anybody can be a manager in this country. The technical committee members will not take the decision of who becomes the next coach of the Super Eagles based on colour, that is the fact”, he concluded.

I Will Stop Helping You If You Dump South Africa For Super Eagles – Ex-Bafana Bafana Skipper Warns Okon

0

The international future of Ime Okon is one that has dominated discussions for a while with the highly rated defender eligible to represent Nigeria and South Africa, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

20 year old Okon was born in South Africa to a Nigerian father and a South African mother making him eligible for both countries, but despite getting a call up to the senior national team of South Africa the Supersport United defender says he is still undecided on his international future.

That statement hasn’t gone down well with former captain of the senior national team of Nigeria Thulani “Tyson” Hlatshwayo, who feels Okon owes South Africa his allegiance going by the fact that he was raised and nurtured by the system.

“He grew up here, he studied here, and coach Gavin Hunt took him from Randburg Football Club. He is South African, and he speaks Afrikaans. I have told him he needs to stay in South Africa because it will be difficult for him to crack into the Nigeria national team,” Tyson said of Ikon.

He went further to say he will stop offering help to the rising defender if he goes ahead to play for Nigeria. “I told him I am going to stop helping him if he chooses to play for Nigeria because there are things in his game that need to be polished,” Hlatshwayo noted.

“The more he plays, the more experience he is going to get, and he will do well. I don’t know if it has something to do with him being young, but he is quick and strong, and we complement one another very well.”

A Review Of Live Betting

0

Live betting is arguably the fastest growing form of placing bets and a right strategy or idea can be useful to a good success rate. While standard online sports betting principles apply to this form of gambling, everything moves at a faster pace.

One fascinating thing about live betting is how the odds/lines/total move in tandem with every sequence of play and in possession, hereby affording the bettors a host of positives to make the best out of it with the odds constantly changing as the game progresses while they watch or follow it live.

The perfect way to get more out of your betting is surely via live betting.  It is more profitable if done strategically with less emotion. As the article progresses we will highlight some few tips and the benefit this option of betting provides in order for you to consider placing a bet on live games.

There are a lot of betting opportunities during live games for bettors to explore. Keeping aside the option of pre game markets, live betting sites provide options like the next booking, goal scorer, team to score, next foul among others.

A wrong bet can be made prior to a match meaning a different likely outcome from what one earlier envisaged. Live betting gives the option of having a change of heart.  The bets in the course of the sport, such as football betting , provide a chance for a change of heart. Another bet can be placed on the team with a higher likelihood of a win so as to mitigate the losses.

For instance it means one can decide to bet on Chelsea scoring after going behind against Manchester City with the odds much more higher and more rewards if the betting comes out right, and it was the case when both teams met at Stamford Bridge in a English Premier League game which ended in a 4-4 draw.

Not to forget that the live wagger would have been lost if in the aforementioned game we are using for emphasis, if it were Manchester City who scored the next goal. It is his however a risk worth taking.

From experience, the main advantage of live betting is the fact that it allows you to make decisions based on what is in front of you in the moment in time. Meaning you can decide to bet against a team winning if their key player gets injured during the course of the game. A feature that isn’t available if you do a pre game bet.

The use of live betting also improves knowledge of a particular game and focus. A good understanding of the game can enhance a better prediction of what might likely happen next.  This is the option that most students of any game are advised to use.

Placing a bet pre game is based on watching it or not. Because you hardly can make any amends when it’s on. However when you place a live bet you’ll have certain revelations that you might not have noticed otherwise.

However because of the unpredictable nature of most games, it is worthy to note that live betting can be counter productive when a surprise or an upset happens. Traditional betting makes it a lot simpler to stick to a particular idea and how much we commit to the bet.

Another sour side of live betting is that it can be addictive and not advisable for bettors who don’t have a certain level of control when betting. It could lead to possibly losing more money. Another thing worthy to note is that it gives little or no room for reflection.

The fact that a decision has to be made in an instant means pressure is more on the bettors, which could lead to poor choices especially when one is in a hurry to beat time ahead of the next possible event, which you want to bet on. A lot of people struggle to be at their best under such circumstances.

So here are some tips to aid your choices when you want to place a live bet.

1.  Timing Is Key

A good understanding of the sport will enable when to place a bet during the course of a game. Also making sure you are aware of the odds means having the chance to make use of any good swings.

2. See The Game Live – It’s better to see the game as it happens when one wants to use live betting. Watching the game gives one a better idea than using text commentary or even listening to radio commentary.

3. Key Statistic –  It’s a common practice for live betting sites to provide up to date statistics as they unfold. A good analysis of the statistics for various sports gives you an edge when making predictions for live betting.

Super Eagles Star Points Out Five Major Tactical Difference Between Finidi George And Jose Peseiro

0

The interim head coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Finidi George took charge of the team for the first time and led them to a 2-1 win over Ghana in an international friendly game played in the Moroccan city of Marrakesh.

Finidi who was assistant to Jose Peseiro who left upon the expiration of his contract last month, maintained largely the same players who prosecuted the Africa Cup of Nations tournament, where they were beaten by the host Cote d’Ivoire 2-1 in the final.

However, a player in the team who spoke to OwnGoalNigeria.com on the conditions of anonymity has listed five major things, the Enyimba coach did differently from the Portuguese who was in charge for 18 months.

1. Aggressive Pressing – He told us to press high and squeeze the opponent and it led to a high turnover thrice during the game against Ghana. Peseiro isn’t a fan of pressing high, he prefers we keep our shape and stay deep in our half.

2. Passing From The Back – In the game against Ghana, the instruction was clear that you only go long when you have no passing option from the back. We were told to build from the back using the three centre backs and the full backs who are meant to invert to increase our numbers in the midfield when we are in possession. It wasn’t the case under Peseiro, who prefers we go long.

3. Overload The Opponent’s Box- Having numbers in the opposition box was Finidi’s strong words before the game. He made it clear that we should always have bodies around the box and not leave the top striker isolated. So we have two players in attack at every given moment. It was majorly Victor Osimhen on his own under Peseiro.

4. Inverted Wingers, Wide Full Backs – More like how most modern wingers operate. When we are in the opposition half they tuck in to overload the box while the full backs go wide. The only time our wingers stay wide is when they are tracking the full backs. With Peseiro the wingers were made to play more advanced but wide and the full backs can’t take advance position because the idea was to defend first.

5. Keep The Ball – This was the most valuable instruction Finidi gave us. His idea is to have us dominate the opponent and not be in a hurry to release the ball . Always pass to the closest player and move as a team. With Peseiro we dwell less on the ball , he want us to play it forward as soon as possible.

It was the first game that caretaker coach Finidi George took charge of the team following the exit of Jose Peseiro upon the expiration of his contract last month.

After the game Dessers was asked about the difference he noticed in the style of play of both coaches, and he praised the attacking approach of the interim coach which is in sharp contrast to the defensive style they played with the AFCON under Peseiro.

“Before the game we had a meeting and he wanted us to press more aggressive and I think we did it especially in the first half, we did it very very good then you see we got chances out of this and it gives confidence to the team that we can attack more, create more chances and that is a good thing and I think this is the way Super Eagles should play”, he explained at the post match presser.
