Official – FIFA Reject Super Eagles Petition Against DR Congo

0

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) say they will appeal the decision by FIFA disciplinary committee rejecting their petition against DR Congo for fielding ineligible players in the World Cup qualifiers playoff, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Nigeria protested that several players in the team of DR Congo were ineligible for the game, which they won 4-3 on penalties to pick the sole ticket to represent Africa at the intercontinental playoff in Mexico.

The players flouted the constitutional requirements to be a bonafide citizen of DR Congo, as they hold dual nationality which is forbidden and not recognized by the laws of the country.

Confirming the rejection of the petition, the General Secretary of the NFF Dr Sanusi Mohammed said they will appeal the decision, keeping alive the hope that they will get a favourable judgement.

“We have received the decision of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee on our petition, but we are not satisfied with the decision, which rejected our petition. I want to assure Nigerians that the NFF has immediately commenced the process of appealing the decision,” said NFF General Secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi.

Premier League Title Race 2026: Arsenal vs Man City Today | Key Fixtures, Standings and March Update

0

Arsenal lead the Premier League by nine points in March 2026, while Manchester City remain in pursuit with a game in hand. With both sides playing today, the title race could take another important turn.

The English Premier League Title Race Intensifies: What Today’sMatches Could Change

By mid-March 2026, the Premier League season has turned into a tightly contested title race. Arsenal remain at the top of the table with a solid lead, but the outcome is still far from decided. With only a few matches left, every result carries significant weight. Follow all today’s livescore updates to keep track of results that could influence the Premier League title race.

The fixtures played over the weekend of March 14–15 provided more clarity. Arsenal recorded a 2-0 victory over Everton at the Emirates Stadium, while Manchester City dropped points in a 1-1 draw against West Ham.

Those results increased the gap between the two sides. However, today’s matches could quickly change the momentum again. A win for Arsenal would strengthen their control at the top, while Manchester City need three points to keep the pressure alive and reduce the gap.

Current Standings Snapshot (mid-March 2026)

Arsenal: 31 matches, 21 wins, 7 draws, 3 losses. 70 points, +39 goal difference (61 scored, 22 conceded)
Manchester City: 30 matches, 18 wins, 7 draws, 5 losses. 61 points, +32 goal difference

Manchester United: roughly 54 points in third place

Aston Villa: around 51 points and competing for a Champions League spot

The top two have moved well ahead of the chasing pack. United and Villa remain competitive but currently lack the consistency needed to seriously challenge the leaders.
Arsenal’s nine-point advantage is substantial, yet Manchester City’s game in hand means they could still close the gap with a single win.

Arsenal’s Form and What to Expect Today

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal keep showing real consistency and cool heads when things get tough. Their latest win against Everton proved they can defend solidly and finish chances when it matters most. Having suffered only three defeats all season so far, they stand out as one of the steadiest teams in the Premier League.

Bukayo Saka still shines brightest in the biggest fixtures, and the whole squad has coped brilliantly with a packed fixture list plus rotation, despite the pressure from European games too. Going into today’s clash, Arsenal will look to boss the ball, set the pace themselves, and cut out silly mistakes.

Putting in a solid shift and picking up a good result here would edge them even nearer to the Premier League crown while keeping their fine run going strong.

Manchester City’s Task in Today’s Fixture

Despite dropping points against West Ham, Manchester City remains firmly in the race. Erling Haalandcontinues to be a major attacking threat, and City’s overall structure allows them to dominate most matches.

Their main issue has been turning control into consistent wins in recent games. Today’s match is pivotal: a win would narrow the gap significantly and keep the title race fiercely competitive. Any further dropped points could give Arsenal a significant psychological advantage. At this stage, the title race is effectively between Arsenal and Manchester City.

What the Run-In Could Decide

With under ten matches remaining for most teams, every point has become vitally important.

A few decisive factors are expected to determine how the season concludes:

Consistency under pressure: Arsenal have demonstrated far greater reliability in tight situations than in recent campaigns.

Remaining head-to-head encounters: Any further meeting between Arsenal and Manchester City has the potential to dramatically shift the balance of the race.

Injuries and accumulating fatigue: The ability to rotate effectively and rely on squad depth will grow increasingly critical as the fixture list becomes more congested.

The Premier League rarely hands out titles early.
Arsenal hold the advantage, but City’s pedigree means nothing is certain. Tomorrow football matches could play a key role, as the race is now clearly between Arsenal and Manchester City. Fans can expect drama right until the final whistle. Will Arsenal seal it, or will City produce another trademark surge? The next few weeks will decide.

Nigerian Footballer Obi Stabbed In Lithuania Before League Game

0

The football community of Lithuania have been thrown into a state of shock following a stabbing incident involving Nigerian player Chinonso Jeremiah Obi, who plays for League side Dainava.

Reports say the incident happened in Alytus, and the Nigerian was attacked with a knife shortly before his team travelled for a league game.

According to the club’s fan group on social media, the Nigerian was seriously injured and taken to the hospital where he is responding to treatment. It happened just before the Lithuanian Pirma Lyga third-round fixture, as Alytus-based club Dainava prepared to face Tauras Tauragė away from home today.

TV3.lt is reporting that according to the Alytus County Police, the emergency call was received at 10:50 a.m., after witnesses who saw the attack alerted authorities. The incident took place on Naujoji Street, in what has been described as a shocking act of violence in broad daylight.

Police confirmed that the injured player, born in 2005 (later confirmed by Lithuanian Football Federation as Chinonso Jeremiah Obi), is currently being treated in hospital, while the suspect – a 2007-born individual – has been detained. A pre-trial investigation has been launched to determine the full circumstances of the attack.

The Lithuanian Football Federation (LFF) reacted strongly, condemning both the act of violence and any form of discrimination linked to the attack.

“What happened in Alytus crosses all boundaries of humanity,” said LFF president Edgaras Stankevičius. “The person who was attacked is not only a player, but a young man who came to Lithuania to pursue his career, represent his team and contribute to its success.”

He also warned about the wider impact such incidents can have on football’s image internationally.

“It is incredibly unfortunate that there are still individuals capable of such behaviour, especially in the middle of the day,” he added.

The federation reiterated its zero-tolerance stance towards racism and discrimination, emphasizing that football must remain a safe and inclusive environment.

“Racism has no place in football or in society. Every player, regardless of nationality, skin colour or origin, must feel safe and be able to do what they do best – inspire fans on the pitch. Football should unite, not divide.”

As a result of the incident, the scheduled match between Dainava and Tauras Tauragė has been postponed, with a new date to be announced.

Mikel Against Decision By Tosin To Play For Super Eagles After Initial Rejection

0

While some Nigerians will be fine with the decision of Tosin Adarabioyo to commit his international future to Nigeria, the same can’t be said about former captain of the team John Obi Mikel.

Tosin persistently snubbed the chance to represent Nigeria starting from 2018 when he was first approached by former coach Gernot Rohr.

In 2022 he reiterated his desire to progress through the youth ranks of England to the main team, shortly after leading Fulham to promotion to the English Premier League.

Now at Chelsea, where is struggling to get regular run of games and approaching 29 in September this year, he has for the first time openly requested to be a part of the Super Eagles.

Not even in the summer, when he visited Nigeria after winning the club world cup, and was interviewed on national television did he openly admitted like now.

“I have been through the English youth national teams. I was born in London, but I also feel very connected to my Nigerian roots. Last summer I spent my vacation in Nigeria, it’s a wonderful country with a fascinating culture. I followed the Nigerian national team intensively at the last Africa Cup of Nations, they have a fantastic team. It would be a great honour for me to wear the green jersey, but currently my focus is entirely on my goals with Chelsea FC”, he was quoted as saying by Tribuna.

It’s this type of behaviour from players born abroad that Mikel spoke about in an interview last year , where he called out players who have hoped on a call up to another country but later switched to Nigeria at an age, where they know they can’t get into the national team of their choice.

Mikel was speaking in relation to Shola Ameobi, and the case is not that different from that of Tosin. Mikel said such players are not welcome and they should stick and die with their earlier choice.

“Shola had the opportunity to come play for Nigeria. Nigeria were chasing him, the Nigerian FA kept asking Shola to come play for us, and he refused.

“He said, ‘No, I wanna play for England. I am waiting for England, waiting for a call-up from England.’

“Shola gave us a call when he was 29, almost 30, to come and play for us, and then he came and only played one year. That was when the Nigerian FA didn’t have an option because we were going to the World Cup, so, okay, let’s just give him the chance.

“But he waited till he was past his best… then he decided, ‘I wanna come play for Nigeria.’ Those are the things I am talking about. We are not a second option. I didn’t know what the situation was with his family back then, but just an example for me. Players shouldn’t wait, you can’t wait.

While acknowledging that Ameobi is a “lovely fella”, Mikel Obi was forthright in his criticism of the former striker’s decision-making.

“If you make a decision when you’re 17, or 16, stick to it. Don’t give us a call when you are 30 and say, ‘Now, I wanna represent my African roots”.

We Earned It On The Pitch – Coach Of DR Congo Mock Super Eagles Protest

0

Head coach of the Democratic Republic of Congo Sebastian Desabre has fired a subtle dig at the protest lodged by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) against his team after losing the world cup qualifiers playoff in November.

Desabre’s ward picked the ticket to represent Africa at the intercontinental playoff after beating Nigeria 4-3 on penalties in the final in Morocco.

After the game Nigeria filed a protest against several players in the team of DR Congo saying they are ineligible to play in the game, because they flouted the country’s constitution which bars citizens from having dual nationality.

World football governing body FIFA is yet to rule on the protest, paving the way for DR Congo to continue in their quest to be at the World Cup for the first time since 1974.

They will face the winner between New Caledonia and Jamaica for a spot in the final of the playoff, which guarantees a spot at the world cup in Mexico, Canada and the United States of America in two months time.

Coach of the team Desabre aimed a dig at Nigeria explaining how their navigated through the qualifiers with their performance on the pitch, a statement which is a mockery of Nigeria’s attempt to snatch their spot using the allegation of ineligible players.

Speaking with FIFA, he said, “We’re really fired up. We’re still on course to meet our main objective.

“That’s the goal we set ourselves when I took this job three and a half years ago. This final will be our 13th match since our qualifying campaign began. It has been a long road and we have worked our way through every stage.”

He also maintained that his players have earned their place through years of work and resilience, highlighting his team’s defensive discipline as a key factor in their campaign, noting that DR Congo have conceded just one goal in their last four qualifying matches.

“I can’t point to just one moment in the journey,” he said.

“It’s about everything we’ve been through together – the highs and the lows. Those experiences have made us stronger and more resilient, and they’ve led us to this point. After all the hard work the players and the staff have put in over the last three years, they’ve thoroughly earned it.

“Defensive solidity is the bedrock of our side, but our attacking numbers have also been good in recent matches. In Congo DR, we’re lucky enough to have talented players who ply their trade at top clubs. Above all, everyone has really bought into the project we’ve been building together.”

Revealed- New Super Eagles Forward Blew Chelle Away With His Pace

Head coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Eric Chelle included three surprise names in his list of players for the upcoming friendly tournament in Turkey, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

The initial plan was for the tournament to take place in Jordan but it has been moved to Turkey due to the escalating violence in the Middle East in the war between Israel and Iran.

Nigeria who won’t be at the world cup will use the tournament to begin the second phase of the rebuild of the team under Eric Chelle, who led the team to a third place finish at the AFCON in January.

They will open their campaign at the tournament against Iran on the 27th of March, while Jordan take on Costa Rica in the tournament’s other game.

Per the organiser, the final round of games will be played on the 31st of March, with Nigeria up against Jordan while Iran square up with Costa Rica.

Chelle who led the team to a third place finish at the AFCON in January has already submitted the list of players for the tournament to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), and sources say he called up two new wingers who are in their mid 20s.

” One of the new players has blistering pace and it blew Chelle away. The coach believe he is the fastest player he has ever seen in a league not so highly rated. Nigerians will love him because he is very exciting”, a source said.

Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo, who is the fourth new player expected to be in the team is yet to be certain due to doubts on if the English FA will provide the necessary letter of clearance confirming his switch of nationality, after representing them at various youth levels.

The Statistic that is Changing How Bettors Analyze NPFL in 2026

0

Football results can be deceptive. A team may dominate possession, create several dangerous chances, and still leave the pitch with nothing to show for it. On the other hand, a side that spends most of the match defending may steal three points from a single opportunity.

Because of this unpredictability, analysts across modern football increasingly rely on deeper performance metrics to understand how a game actually unfolded. One statistic in particular has become central to that analysis: expected goals.

Originally developed by data analysts studying shot probability, expected goals, commonly referred to as xG, has become one of the most widely discussed football metrics worldwide. From elite European leagues to domestic competitions such as the Nigeria Premier Football League, xG now plays an important role in explaining why certain teams consistently create scoring opportunities while others struggle to convert possession into chances.

As the 2026 NPFL season approaches its decisive stages, the influence of expected goals is becoming more visible in how matches are analyzed, discussed, and predicted.

Why Expected Goals Is Becoming Essential for Understanding NPFL Matches

For many football fans encountering the concept for the first time, understanding expected goals explained can significantly change the way matches are interpreted.

Expected goals measures the quality of scoring opportunities rather than simply counting how many goals were scored. Each shot taken during a match is assigned a probability value based on several factors, including:

– distance from goal

– shooting angle

– defensive pressure

– type of assist or build-up play

– body part used for the shot

For example, a close-range attempt inside the six-yard box will typically carry a much higher expected goal value than a speculative shot from outside the penalty area.

By adding together the probability values of each shot a team creates, analysts can estimate how many goals a team would normally be expected to score based on the quality of its chances. This provides a more accurate picture of attacking performance than the final scoreline alone.

What Expected Goals Reveals That Scorelines Often Hide

One of the most valuable aspects of xG is its ability to highlight performances that traditional statistics may overlook. A match may end with a narrow 1–0 scoreline, suggesting a tightly contested game. However, expected goals data might reveal that the losing team actually produced more high-quality chances and was unlucky not to score.

This type of situation occurs frequently in competitive leagues such as the NPFL, where matches can be influenced by individual moments rather than sustained attacking dominance.

For example, a team may create several clear opportunities throughout the match but fail to convert them due to strong goalkeeping or poor finishing. Meanwhile, the opposing side may score from a single counterattack.

Without looking at the underlying chance creation data, it becomes difficult to evaluate which team actually performed better. Expected goals analysis allows observers to separate performance from outcome, an important distinction when assessing teams across an entire season.

Examples from the 2026 NPFL Season

Several fixtures in the current NPFL campaign demonstrate how expected goals analysis can provide deeper insight into match dynamics.

In recent encounters involving Remo Stars, the team has often generated a high volume of chances through aggressive attacking play and quick transitions in the final third. Even in matches where results have not reflected their attacking pressure, xG figures indicate that the team continues to produce dangerous scoring opportunities.

Similarly, clubs such as Enyimba and Rangers International have been involved in fixtures where the balance of chances did not always match the final scoreline.

A match may end with a narrow result, yet underlying statistics reveal that both teams produced multiple high-probability opportunities during the game. These patterns help explain why some teams appear more threatening than their results might suggest, while others may be overperforming relative to the chances they create.

Upcoming NPFL Fixtures Where xG Could Shape the Narrative

As the 2026 NPFL season approaches critical stages, several upcoming fixtures could highlight the importance of expected goals analysis.

The anticipated matchup between Enyimba and Rivers United represents a clash between two teams with attacking players capable of creating high-quality chances. Matches like this often produce tactical battles where the quality of opportunities becomes more important than the total number of shots.

Another fixture attracting attention is Remo Stars vs Rangers International, where both sides have shown the ability to generate attacking momentum during recent matchweeks.

These types of games often illustrate how expected goals metrics can reveal which team controlled the most dangerous phases of the match. Even when the final scoreline remains close, the underlying chance creation data may provide a clearer explanation of how the game unfolded.

Why Expected Goals Is Becoming Part of Modern Football Analysis

Football analysis has evolved significantly in the past decade. Metrics that were once confined to data analysts are now widely discussed in broadcasts, tactical breakdowns, and sports journalism.

Expected goals is one of the most influential of these statistics because it helps explain performance in a way that traditional match statistics cannot. For leagues such as the NPFL, where matches are often intense, competitive, and unpredictable, the ability to evaluate chance quality provides a valuable additional layer of insight.

Fans, analysts, and observers increasingly use expected goals to understand whether a team’s results reflect its actual performance level or whether future results might change as the season progresses.

In modern football, the scoreboard still determines the outcome of a match. But statistics like expected goals often reveal the deeper story behind how that result came to be.

We Played To Osimhen’s Strength Not Onuachu – Super Eagles Stars Explains

0

The recent run of Paul Onuachu in front of goal for Turkish side Trabzonspor has brought discussions about why he isn’t able to replicate the same form for the senior national team of Nigeria, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Onuachu has been in excellent form this season with 21 goals in 23 league games. In all competitions he has 23 goals in 26 games, including scoring in ten consecutive games .

Meanwhile for the senior national team of Nigeria he has four goals in 34 games since making his debut in 2019. He has also played in two senior tournament where he has just one goal.

” Club football is totally different from international football. We train mostly with Osimhen as the main man than with Onuachu. So we play more to his strength. That’s how I see it”, a Super Eagles player revealed.

Another player said it’s really hard to provide an explanation but feels Paul hasn’t had a long run in the team to show his true colours, hence always under pressure to deliver when he gets to play.

” It’s totally different if you ask me. Paul like most strikers in the team have not been given a regular run of game. They have been in and out unlike Osimhen who has been three for a while. There is a different kind of pressure a player who isn’t a regular faces”, a member of the team to the recent AFCON explained.

Farioli Talked Super Eagles Star Out Of January Move To EPL Side

0

Head coach of FC Porto Francesco Farioli says he talked Nigeria international defender Zaidu Sanusi out of a January move to an unnamed team in the English Premier League, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Zaidu who has been at the team since 2020 when he joined from Santa Clara pushed for an exit after losing his spot in the team, following his return from a long injury layoff picked up while on international duty with Nigeria.

Farioli said he talked the 28 year old out of the move, and explained why he hasn’t seen a lot of game lately.

“It has to do with the plan. Had three good games, Moura played a good game with Sporting. With Benfica we had the opportunity to have Martim and Alberto”, he explained before their 3-0 win over Moreirense.

“I am very happy with Zaidu’s performances, in January when there was the possibility of heading to the Premier League, I had a conversation with him, if he was happy to be here, I was always happy with his attitude, the ability to help and his answer was clear, he said he was happy to stay and have a squad in the team.

“He waited for his opportunity, which came weeks later. He is progressing very well, he is one of the players who are exemplary. He is a player who is adored by the fans. He’s a player with a lot of energy,” he concluded.
