Best Tactics Doesn’t Win Games Everytime: Chelle Tells Super Eagles Players Ahead Of World Cup Qualifiers

0

Head coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Eric Chelle says the best tactics doesn’t necessarily mean you will games all the time, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Chelle who will be back in the hot seat in September, when the Super Eagles play in the world cup qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa respectively made this known in an interview with Onzemondial.

He explained that some coaches vary their system in relation to the opponents, and used the system of the duo of Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho to properly explain his point.

“Some coaches adapt their tactics in relation to the opponent, they seek to counter the opponent. A bit like what the great coach that was Mourinho did. So his ideal was to find the opponent’s weaknesses and counter the opponent. And then, you have Guardiola-type coaches who want to impose their style of play. And you have others, the new teams that resemble those of the Red Bull project, based on a transition game, with a very high pressing to put opponents in difficulty.

” I position myself between Guardiola and the Red Bull project in transition. I don’t want to counter the opponent, I want to impose my game and my philosophy”, he said.

Speaking further, he explained why the best tactics doesn’t necessarily win games all the time, citing the game between Manchester United and Lyon in the Europa League as a case study.

“No, not necessarily. In recent weeks, we have seen many games on TV, and we realize that the games are not played on tactics. The games are played mentally and especially the big games. For example, the match between Manchester United and Lyon, we go from 2-0 to 2-2 and then 2-4. And finally, it’s no longer tactical, it’s mental, it’s small details, it’s one meter away from placement.

“The pure Italian-style tactics of 20 or 30 years ago no longer exist. Today, football is going very, very fast. And it is no longer played at two meters. Today, it is played at one meter, or even 50 centimeters. The mind makes the difference. During big matches, this is what you will propose in terms of movement, game project, performance, mental preparation and interactions between players that will lead you to have results.

“Tactics are an eternal restart. Before, the 4-4-2 was the preferred scheme, then there was the 3-5-2, then the 4-3-3. It totally changes, then it comes back. We’ve already seen everything”.

World Cup Qualifiers: Chelle Explains Why Diamond Formation Is Best For Super Eagles Against Rwanda, South Africa

0

Head coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Eric Chelle has hinted at the team maintaining the diamond formation when they qualifiers for the 2026 world cup resumes in September, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

The coach has played with the formation since taking over as coach of the Super Eagles, with two draws and three wins in five matches so far. He looks certain to maintain the formation.

Nigeria will be up against Rwanda and South Africa respectively in the world cup qualifiers, where they are currently six points behind the leaders South Africa, although a three potential point deduction for fielding an ineligible player is expected to be slammed on South Africa.

Talking about his tactics, Chelle explained why he prefers playing the diamond formation in an interview with Onzemondial.

“I like the 4-4-2 in diamond. I like to play with two strikers, have numerical superiority in midfield. Because already, there are not many teams that play with a diamond. So, we are still in numerical superiority in midfield. And then, I also like the flat 4-4-2 that turns 4-2-4 when you have the ball”,

Chelle went further to defend the system saying like every tactics, it has it strength and weakness but can be varied based on how the team is set up and players availability.

“Every scheme and vision has strengths and weaknesses. In game systems, it’s animation that counts. You can play in 4-3-3, with a top striker who goes down to the midfield, as in (Pep) Guardiola’s Barça (Barcelona ) with Messi. In reality, it turned into a diamond. So it is the animation of your players and the profile of your players that will make you readable or not.

“The idea is to have a starting system. But again, what matters to me is movement. I play in a 4-4-2 diamond. If I have two top attackers, I know I will be more axial. Now, if in my two attackers, I line up two wingers, I necessarily know that my two wingers, unconsciously, will orient themselves towards the corridors.

“So in fact, the most important thing for me, when we talk about the game system, is the animation and the profile of the players that you will align. They are the ones who will power your system. And to answer your question, there is no ideal system. I have a preferential system, but above all, I work on the animation and movements of my players”, he concluded.

Chelle Explains Selection Process For New Players In Super Eagles

0

Head coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Eric Chelle has explained the criteria he used in handing call ups to players in his team, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

The coach who is currently in camp with the B team preparing for the CHAN championship is expected to make public his list of players for the upcoming world cup qualifiers games against Rwanda and South Africa respectively next month.

Speaking on the criteria for selection, Chelle who have been in charge of the team for five games listed three main things he considers, before any call up to a player.

“First of all, you need to have playing time. You need to be in top physical shape and you need to be good too. Then, the last thing is tactically. As a coach, you don’t have time. When I took over the Nigerian national team, I only had two sessions before the match”, he told Onze Mondial.

“So, in two training sessions, I have to be able to quickly get the message across and what I want for my team. Physically, the player has to be in shape. He also has to be tactically intelligent to be ready to understand and apply my instructions. You also need good technical quality. And finally, you have to be mentally ready.”
